I have a 50w heater in my 27g tank. It's only rated for a 10g. Do you think it would be ok to leave it? I don't pay for hydro and I know the if it has to work harder, it will shorten it's lifespan, but are there any other risks? I found that I have an older heater, but I don't know how many watts it is, or how old it is. I am not sure I want to put it in the tank for fear or it breaking.

I've had some small ones that worked better than larger ones. As long as it gives you a steady temp I can see no reason not to use it.

Yeah, it depends on ambient temperature. A small heater like that would never work in New England, but in warmer regions (or if you keep a warm house) it may just work fine.

Great! Our apartment is kept at a fairly steady temp. Higher then most homes, because we are south facing.
