The older I get the more certain things bug me...

We live on an acerage - we're 15 minutes from one end of town...and 35-40 from the other end - and that's the end we spend the most of our 'town time' in...

In other words, we're not that far away - but far enough away that I've become irritated about make unneccessary trips to the city.

For example - yesterday was a 'fencing' night (2 of our kids fence - but neither was fencing last night). My husband is the volunteer treasurer (many, MANY hours involved in that :fish2: ). After fencing lessons are over - there's a yoga session that parents are welcome to attend.

I hate yoga. But I need to incorporate more easy physical activity into my week since I have some minor health issues that benefit from it.

So - my daughter (who wasn't fencing that night, but wanted to go to yoga) came to town - and killed 3 hours waiting for yoga.

Hubby came to town to work on treasurer stuff - even though he really wanted to stay home and relax after a crazy week at work.

I came with them to go to yoga - even though I wanted to stay home and relax and hang out with my dogs and the parrots.

And guess what??? Yoga was cancelled. But we didn't find out until we had been waiting for well over 2 hours.:scry:

So - three of us made an extra trip to the city, rearranged scheduales to accomodate yoga - and then found out 'by the way' that there was no yoga.

City people get irritated if they have to drive across town...yet country people are not supposed to be annoyed when they make an effort to drive TO town for nothing...

This kind of stuff happens all the time - even the amount of city people who won't come to our house because they won't drive 3 miles on the gravel because it might wreck their car is notable...but they're quick to ask if we can do them country-related favours...

Okay...rant over...I feel better now...thanks for listening...:l24:

I moved out of the city 6 years ago ans basically never looked back. There are plenty of other options in my small town that I can severely limit my city visits to holidays and family birthdays and such.

If people don't want to come to your house, screw them. Meet some people in your area and socialize more with them.

It's not going to kill your kids to be involved in activities available closer to home. Most areas have plenty of opportunities with clubs and organizations.

I'm not trying to sound mean or anything, I just want you to realize as I have that there are usually other options than having to go to the city all the time to do things you want to do. I grew up in the city and now I just try to avoid going there as much as possible. The rest of my family still lives there, so I do have to go there to visit them, but that's about it.

It doesn't matter where we travel...it's an average of 20 minutes to get anywhere from our place...so if we drive to the city or to the town where the kids attend highschool...it's pretty much the same time/distance commitment...

Right now - we often take 4 cars to the city depending on what's up for that day (hubby - work, me - work, son - University, daughter - fencing)...and other times we have to come home to do chores before heading back to the city for evening activities...

We could just move to the city...but I don't think my 11 horses and 19 chickens would like the cramped back yard...:hmm3grin2orange:

I'm just venting...:14:

Who says? It's your God given right to be annoyed whenever you choose!:hmm3grin2orange:

To be honest with you, It wouldn't bother me too much though. I commute 50 miles each way in traffic 6 days a week to come to a job so I can put in 11 hour days. One extra trip would roll right off...:sconfused:

Yes - we used to do the humongous commute too (when we were young)...guess I'm just getting crabby after 25 years of it...:help:

And I know I have a right to feel irritated, I just feel so 'whiny' when I am...:fish2:

I'm in the boat with you Rue, I live 15 miles from "town" and 5 miles from the nearest store.
I hate going to town!!
I'm very content to sit home and watch cows eat, they are more polite and well mannered than most of the "townies"

Commute? I drove over 1 million miles in 7 years as an OTR driver

I'm with you too, Rue. If something is cancelled, then you should be notified. Your time is important, and it's annoying when it gets wasted.....:scry:

Rue -- if it's any consolation, I'm so jealous you live in the country and would love to live that far out of town again. Not a great option since my husband works on the far side of town and already has a 30-45 minute commute on good days... but I do miss it. I definitely feel your pain, but just thought I'd point out that it's totally worth it! ;)

Thanks guys! :l24:

I love acerage life...but it seems we're spending all our spare time away from the acerage. Or if we're home, we're doing chores (and then we're outside a lot - but it's usually rather tense). We rarely actually sit and enjoy it. I can't remember the last time we actually used the backyard for anything recreational - like a BBQ or even just sitting around a fire...

I keep telling hubby that soon the kids will be independent and we will be able to 'reconvene'...but in the meantime it's still so much driving...

I hope it works out in the end.

And in the meantime...I wish I was telepathic and knew when city events were cancelled...
