I was searching for fish tank backgrounds and clicked on this site and all of a sudden up pops this warning that I have a highly infected computer and it listed about 20 worms I'm supposed to have.
The program looks just like my AVG virus program other than not having the logo at the top. The same color blue, the programs all in the same place and even the time of my last scan. What caught my attention was it asking me to register and I already have AVG paid for each year.
I opened up my AVG program and ran a full scan. Clean computer. I ran Windows Defender and again a clean computer. But this other bloody program I could not get rid of. I had their icon down by my clock, on my desktop and in my programs. My pop up blocker sounded like I was making popcorn!
I deleted all my cookies, ran my computer registry, deleted, deleted, deleted. I finally got rid of their annoying announcement every 2 seconds after about an hour.
Honestly. You're afraid to even check out websites without getting slammed with some nonsense. This was clearly some boot-leg site that has copied AVG.
Rant is over.

did you run your scan in safe mode? restart your computer, as it is coming back on tap the F8 key repeatedly, that will get you to an options screen and then select safe mode.
then run your scan again

Then what? Just leave in safe mode?
I think it's gone. Haven't seen nothing of it for the last hour but I will do as you suggest if I see it again. It was H*** to get rid of.
It is called PersonalAV. If you ever see it, run.

That's what you get for going to those Amish porn sites LH lol.
I had problem with that too a while back at an auto site. Haven't seen hide nor hair of it since.
I run AVG as well.

Saw it twice, did an emergency shutdown both times it popped up, scans said I had nothing, and as I said, haven't seen it again. Not a particularly effective virus for the smarter of surfers, it seems.
Edit: Well that was weird. Had my thumb over the clicker, sneezed, and my thumb shoved forward posting my message. Was kinda cool, actually. (Or my brain is just easily amused because it's 5 a.m. Either way.)

I have run into that one, too, or one that sounds very similar. It hasn't bothered my computer but like you, I avoid the websites that cause that to happen (scared to go back to them).

no, then you just restart it like normal again...all safe mode does is start your computer with only the bare minimum running, and that just makes it easier for your scans to find viruses, less places for them to hide.

Just one of the things you have to deal with, it gets worse every year it seems. Have had to fix problems like this for friends and even on my own computer several times. You sound like you got the situation in control. Most of my friends didn't even a virus scanner installed, or had disabled the firewall in order to play some game it was conflicting with.
A few other useful programs I usually run every week or two are ad-aware and spybot search & destroy. Also a good registry cleaner.
Since I've changed to using firefox, I've had a lot less issues with popups and other annoying things too. A very cool plugin called adblock for it. Rarely if ever see ads these days, if I do just right click and ban that ad and the server the ads are coming from.

I had a screan pop up that was similar looking to AVG that was telling me we had a trojan blah blah whatever virus. AVG detected nothing, so I did a search on google for the virus it named and came up w/ this website [Only Registered Users Can See Links.] I downloaded the program, went through the steps and restarted and the annoying "virus" was gone. :19:

That sounds like a pretty common piece of malware to me hobbs. Look something like this?
[Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
My wife is in to facebook, and she has gotten that one (and its older cousins) through embedded links more than once. Movies, jpegs, you name it. Anyway, download malware bytes, and spybot search and destroy--one or both of them should get it and they are both free.

Even after I thought it was gone I looked in program files and here it was. More deleting. Makes you wonder how something can take over your computer completely in 5 seconds!
Got rid of all my tracking cookies and a bunch of crap. It's called PersonalAV and is Adware.
Thanks to all for coming to my rescue here and the links and suggestions. Nothing turns our blood to ice like our computer having problems. lol
VoidParadigm..........You totally cracked me up this morning with this:

Sorry I didn't notice this thread sooner Hobbsy. The free version of Malwarebytes Antimalware and the free version of Superantispyware should clean your machine fairly well. I use'em both. :22:
