I'm new to this forum, and to the world of online posts. Guess I've been living under a rock...anyway, I've been keeping tanks for 20+ years, so I'm not new to this hobby. :22:

My latest tank is a 27 hex with an Amazon biotope: 3 kinds of sword plants, baby's tears, and hairgrass; the fish are 7 Neons, 2 Emerald Cories, 5 Oto cats, and a pair of Blue (German) Rams. Tank has been running for almost 6 months. I also have a 3 gallon tank with a Betta and a dwarf catfish, running about the same length of time.

My other hobby is Living History - I am a member of an 18th Century Cavalry unit, the first Commissioned Cavalry of the USA. I have 6 horses (all rescued) and 5 cats (all rescued).

Welcome to THEE AC.

Mind posting pictures of your biotope? I am also a biotope keeper however mine is rio negro.

Revolutionary war reenactments are neat. I do some ww2/korea/vietnam reinacting with a few coworkers, its very very fun educational stuff.

Sorry, I tried to post a recent pic of my 27, but the file's too large for this site. I'm computer illiterate about resizing pix so y'all will have to wait until I can figure that out. Any suggestions would be welcome.

I've had goldfish, tetras (various), plecos, Mbuna cichlids and an Oscar named Hoover (for his eating habits) who was 14" when he died. This latest is my first foray into both a planted tank and a biotope, and it's proved interesting so far. Here's a list of the 27's equipage; I've told you about the occupants:

Marineland Magnum HOT canister w/ DIY spraybar
Satellite Dual 40w 6700/10K bulbs (total 80 watts, plus Lunar Light)
9w UV sterilizer run only at night
Eco-Complete substrate with gravel cap
Driftwood and rocks
Temp: 78 F
kH: about 5
pH: about 6.6
Yeast CO2 added
Liquid ferts 2x week, Wonder Shell and substrate ferts 1x month.
Lights on timers for a 12 hour photoperiod.

I have well water, not city, and straight from the tap it's soft and acid, so I've "got it made" matching my water to my fish. The rams were added on August 3, and 12 days later spawned. No luck - the eggs were gone a day later (eaten I presume). Shocked the heck out of me: I did absolutely nothing to encourage the spawning, plus so many say rams are "fussy." Guess they really like my tank! ;)

In the short time I've been a member, I've gotten a HUGE amount of info and help from others. This place is AMAZING, and I am so glad I came across it!

In total, we've rescued an additional 2 horses (now sadly deceased), and 5 more cats. The horses are used in our Living History cavalry unit, so they are trained as war horses (without the risk of being in an actual battle). It is so very rewarding to take a frightened, abused, sick animal and turn its life around. Believe me, they KNOW they've got it good, too!
