For any one knowledgeable about either...we're looking at a 2009 Jeep Compass or a Toyota Matrix 2010...What do you think????
WHich are you looking for? What kind of driving?

For dependability-Toyota hands down! lol
For comfort- Jeep is very good!
Sharon

We're just looking for an all around vehicle...highway and city driving . No off road. I love the look and feel of the Jeep. Toyota is more in our comfort zone as far as dependability goes. We've owned Honda and Toyotas for ages...We're just getting sick of sedans and thought this time we'd do something different....
IMO, both are very well made, and you can't go wrong with either of them. It depends up to what you like and choose.

What about one of the four door pickups? A 4 door colorado or frontier.
Don't know your price range, but the new tahoes and yukons, are AMAZING IMO

Hubby already has a truck....

There are a lot of toyotas up here Sharon. They are very reliable and good all round cars and trucks!
Here is a link on the 09 model matrix.

I would avoid Jeep mostly because of whats going on with chrysler. Who owns them now anyway?
Lots of automatic tranny problems too.If you go with stick you will have less problems.

go for the Jeep ....
Sharon
08-26-2009, 11:58 PM
I think Fiat owns Chrysler now, or at least they have a finger in the pie...We currently drive a Honda Accord, fully loaded, leather interior, nice sound system, yada yada...but we've found that we don't use a lot of the fancy options. Everything's a little less in the Jeep and the Matrix...I will miss the leather, and maybe the sound system. The Matrix is $3000 more than the Jeep, for the same options...except the price does include BlueTooth and the Jeep does not....

Which one is said to be more reliable?
Test drive both but keep an open mind!Be very picky!

go for a ford. just as reliable as toyota or any of the other competition with lots of new more fuel efficient motors and vehicles coming out all the time. the ford edge is a great vehicle with tons of creature comfort options to choose from and they get pretty decent gas mileage(18/25) it has some decent pick up, it can fit 5ppl, and comes factory with some nice options like Sync and you can get some really cool add ons like sun roofs front and rear. now another great ford option if you have a larger family would be the Flex it is a larger vehicle that can seat 6-7ppl has the same motor as the Edge but since it is a larger vehicle it gets a tiny bit less gas mileage(17/24) has similar starting options as the Edge but the Flex does get a bit more luxurious with some of their other options. the only down side to the Flex is that it has a longer wheel base which means it doesnt turn quite as sharp as the Edge and it is a bit truck like when backing up but other than that it is a great vehicle
and yes i am a bit biased seeing as i am a huge Mustang fan and i am a Ford Master Tech at the 6th largest Ford Dealer in the world

We have test driven both...in fact the Jeep is sitting in the driveway. Salesman suggested we bring it home, and take it for a longer drive. It drives beautifully....we were speaking to an owner of this same vehicle who said they are really bad in winter, especially in slush. I can't find any reference to this problem anywhere online. We found the Matrix to be rough and choppy on asphalt with a few bumps, manhole covers etc...I did research that issue and read that it is rough because of it's independant suspension.
Another consideration...Toyota, Honda, Kia, Hondai are all owned by the same guy. No bargaining is very effective. They are giving us $8000 for our six year old Accord. Dodge is giving us $10,000...

Don't know what you think of a Mitsubishi, but my moms is great. Its a 04' or 05' Outlander. Don't think there have been any mechinacals issues. They're quite reliable too.

I like Mitsubishi, but the closest dealer is four hours away. Not that bad for the initial purchase, but it's a long way to drive for normal service....:ssmile:
...I'd go Jeep...in fact we're looking at them too...but the one I want is hard to find...(well, around here it is...)
There's a look I like...and if it don't have the look, I don't wannit...:hmm3grin2orange:

We've been discussing...and we've decided Jeep... unless we change our minds while we're sleeping! I hate big decisions!!!:14:

Just not a Liberty. Hubby had a company one for a while, so unless the new models are better than those of 4-5 years ago...avoid the Libertys...
I was just searching...and can't find the model I'm after...it may be a Compass...but I'll keep looking...just for fun...

What I think is that I'll never be so lucky as to own a new vehicle... I've got an 89 Ford Ranger pickup with almost 200k miles that's rusting to pieces... I'll probably have it til I die... which at this rate won't be too long...

lol, dont even talk about rust. It took so many hours to get it all off of my Maxima, not to mention puting new metal on the eaten through parts. End result was far worth it though
Youre in Japan Sarkazmo, right? Would a Ford there be RHD or LHD?
go for a ford. just as reliable as toyota or any of the other competition
Coff coff. I hope you not meaning the OZZIE ones. The Flacons, Fairmonts, ect ect. They are just rust buckets which fall apart. Trust me Any Toyota will out last a Ford.
IMO for a male, Toyotas no matter what type are slugs. I am more for the Hondas or Mitsubishis. They are great cars, 4b4s and MPV.
If you not wanting a sedan both brands have many options.

No, I was thinking it was the Compass...but it's not...
So I asked hubby what it was...and boy did I blow it! (blush) (blush) (blush)
We WERE in the Jeep lot - but it was used or something...it's actually the Toyota FJ Cruiser

My daughter just got her first car last week!!! She's very excited!
It's a 1991 Pontiac Tempest with over 200,000 kms! White, 4-doors, red interior. She paid an entire $500 for it.
Normally I wouldn't have let her buy it - but it was owned by a mechanic that we know...:hmm3grin2orange:
If she gets a year or two out of it, we'll be happy.
BTW...I drive a 2001 KIA Sportage (EI-EEEE!). Was looking at newer models...and teh KIA Soul caught my eye. Not suitable for us (need a small SUV for country mud/snow) but cute as a bug for city driving!:1luvu:

You should like your jeep they are awesome in the snow. the only one that is ify in the snow is the liberty and thats only because of there high center of gravity they are easy to flip. and if you own a jeep you should treat it like one IMO it needs to go off road to make it happy lol.

The paint is definitely scratched in several places over about a 12inch area...maybe more. I hate it when a new car gets nicked like that! They didn't say how much it will cost them to repair...but I have to say, they did give us a REALLY good deal on our trade. No doubt, it will reduce their profit greatly...I'm leaning towards taking it if the repair looks good. We've also got assurances that if there's a problem later with the repair, they'll handle it. Ken knows the salesman and trusts him....I know that sounds weird, but in this case, I think we can trust him.....

I know the Compass is what my boyfriend (a car guy) calls a "non Jeep" because it's not for what a "real" Jeep is meant for at all and basically on a (I think) dodge neon frame. I looked into them breifly when I was car shopping c. 1.5 years ago too but most of the reviews were talking about lack of power and crappy materials used in the interior.
I usually stick to domestic cars but in this case I say the Matrix.
cocoa_pleco
08-27-2009, 07:06 PM
i'd say Toyota out of the 2, but above all i say Nissan Armada, those things are tanks
as much as i hate domestics, i'll give it to Jeeps that some last for quite a while. Fords i'm still not impressed with, same with Kia and Hyundai. The new Mustangs are ugly. If i had to choose a domestic vehicle, it would be the newer Dodge Challenger
To quote someone on youtube, "i would take a bike in a lighting storm before a Kia or Hyundai"
As for the Kia Soul, that things fugly. Its going to fail like the Scion boxy cube thing whatever its called.
Never thought i would say this about a Nissan, but the Nissan Cube is ugly. Front end is alright but the rear looks horrible.
For the scratches, you can easily get them out. I wish i took pictures of my Maxima before, with all the dents, rust, and scratches it looked pretty bad. People think its a 5 year old car now instead of 18 year old. Did everything with one other person in my garage

The Compass is on a Calibre frame...we have a truck for off road so we're just looking fir a city and highway drive. The earlier versions did have a rep for poor quality interior but the 2009 has improved interior. Power is not really an issue...we don't need to Zoom atround...just drive sedately in comfort...we're old! Excuse spelling mistakes...I'm having a glass of winr...:hmm3grin2orange:

Domestic, I would say the new camaro SS! Thing is the nicest car that isn't over 100k IMO.
As for the armadas, I love those. They look good to begin with, throw some rims on them and they are amazing looking.
You might think the KIA Soul is fugly (along with some of the other 'different' models coming out) but I like them...it's so nice to see something different. At the moment ALL the companies are producing generic versions of sedans, trucks, SUVs...I can't tell one from the other - and I hate that. If I spend a fortune on a new car I don't want to be mistaken for Bob and his new car down the road...
And yes - my KIA certainly has 'cheap' elements that I'm not fond of...but overall, I like the vehicle. I didn't think I was buying a high-quality car when I purchased it...so no disillusionment on my part...

Actually Rue, I liked the look of the Soul...I fiund it cute as well! The ride wasn't great...a little rough...A smooth ride is important to me because of a neck injury. I really don't want to get knocked around and like a nice solid feel to a vehicle. I feel the same way as you do about everything looking alike! It drives me crazy! I think that's why we didn't want our usual this time...

There was once a time when you could see a car a mile away at night and be able to tell what kind of car it was. Tail lights were all so different it was easy.
All the cars and trucks are taking on the same style! No imagination left just competition to make the same thing.
LOL...gotta keep things above board! :hmm3grin2orange:
I'm glad you liked the look of the Soul...it's too bad it's not a nice ride, 'cuz it's cute as a bug, or a goldfish...
Yeah - when I was little, about 4-5, I used to be able to tell cars apart...my mom got such a kick out of it...

Really you are blessed to not have them. They rust if they go any were near water. They fall apart fast. They drink like hell. Sluggish and just basic cars.
Far out classed by cheaper Japanese cars.
IME dad was a Taxi driver for many years when I was younger. So I got to go in all the new Fords, Holden, and Toyota Taxis. From brand new the ford falcon was fine till just of 10,000 km. Then it started falling apart fast. While the rest never gave trouble till off 200,000km.
Not only just things falling apart. BUt they just rusted. And that was just rain or salt did not mater which. They handled and drove rubbish. And now they are just tolerable. But now more plastic than anything. So in cold climates they creak. And in hot climates they just are arrr $%%$s.
With engines, they are limp. All the jap cars bare for toyota out gun them!!!
For fuel it cheaper driving a v8 Land Cruiser. And that is a 4.7 v8 against a 4.0v6.
And taxis get more abuse than normal family cars. Due to the constant use, and heavy driving ect ect.
And on and on.

A Bronco would look great in that colour. It's really weird though...if someone had suggested that our new vehicle would be a shade of orange, I would have thought they were CRAZY! But when I saw it on the lot, I loved it, and Ken did too! In fact, I don't often get excited over new vehicles. It's just not my thing. I actually don't drive much since a very scary accident a few years ago...driving makes me anxious, now. But I drove this home from the dealership, and around town. Poor Ken has hardly had a chance to get behind the wheel yet! I may let him drive tomorrow when we head out of town....:hmm3grin2orange:

Well, being the Retail Operations Manager at Infiniti of Pleasanton, I would have to say the Toyota will give you MUCH greater dependability. The Jeep is decent, but I question where the resale value will fall due to the termoil within the Chrysler Corporation.
The REAL questions are:
How long to you plan on keeping the vehicle?
If over 3 years, The Toyota wins big time.
Are you purchasing or leasing?
If you are leasing, get what you like the best. The bank holds all responsibility for the end of term value.
I do NOT recommend paying cash for a car - with the rates and programs available right now, it's better to keep your money in a place it will grow. You will usually get a better return than what you will pay in finance charges.
Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions, and I subscribed th this thread so you can ask here as well.
Well I guess I should have read the WHOLE thread before I posted! Good luck with your new ride!
Sharon
08-28-2009, 09:41 PM
Thanks Cristoff....We did consider retail value, but it's really six of one and half dozen of the other. We paid $33,000 for the fully loaded Accord that we traded. It was six years old in excellent condition. We got 10,000 and were offered as low as 6200. The Jeep is a cheaper vehicle that had a $2750 rebate. We got a good deal on the trade, compared to other offers, so it'll all balance out in the end.:ssmile: Any idea what the book value is on a 2003 Honda Accord...fully loaded...leather interior.
Cristoff
08-28-2009, 10:05 PM
$10,000 is definately a good number on the Accord. Wholesale book is right at $10,500 or so depending on miles.
It seems like they treated you right on the trade. 30% resale value after 7 model years is about as good as you can expect. I would have been between $8,500 to $9,000.00 depending on condition.
