View Full Version : Stocking?
Goodbye

I have come up with a few ideas for restocking my 38g. Here are the ideas I came up with:
1. 1x Gold Severum, 6x Black Skirt Tetras, 1x BN, and 1x Bumblebee cat
2. A pair of Salvinis
3. 1x Firemouth, 1x Blue Acara, 1x BN and 1x Bumblebee cat
In this thread I am asking for opinions on those 3 ideas. I am open to suggestions on other ideas as well. I would prefer to include some type of SA/CA cichlid in my stocking. Also, I want to make sure I include the BN that I have that survived the bleach.
Thanks,
Agass

1. Is definitely out of the question...as a permanent home anyway. Severums get way to big for a 38.
2 & 3. May work for a while, but would likely need an upgrade in the future as well.
I concur, a pair of salvinis is your best choice.

Could I keep a pair of BN's with a pair of Salvinis?

Alright! I will go with a pair of Salvini and a pair of BN's! Thanks for the feedback guy! My friends i giving me media from his tank, so I won't need to cycle again. Depending on how well everything goes, I may be able to get 4-6 juvie Salvainis this or next weekend. I will keep them until a pair forms, then keep the pair and return the others!

Not so fast , none of these stockings are really suitable for a 38g. Salvini are going to really be pushing things in that size tank. Especially if they end up not liking each other. To top it off they are very effective predators and are well known for dispatching tankmates. The size is also an issue. Some Sals dont get very big , but I've seen a bunch that topped 8" for males and 6" for females. I've also seen pics of a 10"+ male that a guy at MFK had. My own experience with them is that they are only just suitable for a 55g and a bigger tank serves them better. Though a 75g would be just about right for a large pair . I was fortunate that my male (that was pushing 8" and still growing until the disaster that wiped out all but my Sevs hit) didn't have much of an aggressive streak. Many are pretty hostile especially once they get some size on them. Another down side to them is that they tend to be reclusive. My female wasn't but the male stayed hidden in his cave 80% of the time. Not out of fear or anything , just stayed in his spot. This is typical from what I've gathered from alot of Sal keepers. Just their nature. They are a beautiful fish , just need more space than a 38g will offer. Maybe some Dwarf acaras would be in order. I thought you were gonna do Africans in that tank.
