Drip Loop

I recently bought two 9 liter bags of aquasoil to try out on my 24gallon and noticed that they recommend the use of an under layer of power sand. Apparently from what I can gather, this stuff is essentially pumice and peat along with added minerals and things like that. The problem is the price, by the time I added two bags of it to my order it was just as expensive as the aquasoil itself. Needless to say I passed on the power sand, but it left me wondering. The reason its recommended other than the nutrients is because it allows the water to flow throughout the tank freely without getting held up by substrate hardening. I assume this would allow iron oxidizing bacteria to accumulate where the plant roots need it and so forth and so on...
So I guess my question is this... Is there a cheaper alternative to power sand that compliments aquasoil well? Im familiar with laterite and flourite but unsure if thats a good substitute. If possible, I would like something as close to powersand as possible without the prohibitive costs..
Thanks so much for reading my wall of text. :hmm3grin2orange:
