View Full Version : Adjustments?

At the moment my 55 gallon has...
1 Veil Angelfish
1 Shubunkin Goldfish
2 Gold Gourami
2 Flame Gourami
6 Long Finned Zebra Danio
5 Dojo Loaches
2 Ghost Glass Catfish
10 Cory Catfish
2 Betta (separated)
2 Plecos

I've been told I should do a little bit of adjusting to my tank. The shubunkin gets along well with everyone, but I was told he should be taken out. I am looking for suggestions as to what modifications should be made.

Thanks

well first of all the shubumkin is a cold water fish, so I dont know how he will get on with the rest of the tank, or health wise.

The only thing I can see is the amount of fish that wil get larger and outgrow the tank. the plecs for instance wil out grow a 55G (Or at least one of them..)

Other than that, I really cant see a major problem..

Anybody else??

Yes, the goldfish AND the dojos are cold water fish.

This is my suggestion - depending on the species of pleco, they'll more than likely have to go. The gf and dojos are cold water fish, so...If you were looking for a reason to get another tank you have one. Are both bettas in bowls like that? I would put both in a split 10.

Then I would get more danios and glass cats, as well as something else if you like.

Yep, GF out.

Bettas need more room than those little isolation bowls. Absolute min would be 1 gallon but more if possible.

Glass cats school, you need a bigger group of them, like 8-10 total.

Good luck.

I was planning on getting more Danios and Glass Cats, I knew that goldfish and the loaches were cold water...what temp should they be kept? I keep my tank at about 78 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, but the Shubunkin and the Loaches seem to still be playful and healthy.

I have already spoke with my local pet store guy and he said he would trade the Plecos when they get too large and give me younger replacements. I thought that sounded like a good arrangement.

I would love to rehouse my Loaches and Shubunkin, but the only other tank I have is a 20 Gallon long. That would not be large enough for a Shubunkin and 5 Dojo Loaches would it?

And plans are being made to rehouse the Bettas.

Thanks for the input. Appreciate it.

whats other inhabitants are in the 20g?
you could divide it and put the betta's in it
as for the GF and Dojo Loaches
try trading em in at Your LFS

Good for you for being willing to make adjustments. I also agree that the loaches and shubunkin need cooler water (temperate fish water should be <68-75F). If you do not have a way to house them (especially the shubunkin) you can always rehome them (I've used craigslist for this). I've never kept loaches but looking at their size I would think a 20g long would be ok for them.

I'm glad you have a plan for your plecs, are they common plecos or are they a species that stays smaller? If they are a small species then you will not need to return them.

The glass cats need to be in schools, I would increase the number to at least 6 before adding anything else. I'm surprised you're not having territory battles with the gouramis but if they're all copacetic then I would not mess with them. For sure do not add another gourami. A couple more danios (4 maybe) and I would call it quits because you're already heavily stocked when calculating the fish mass based on adult sizes. And I wouldn't add if you don't move the shubunkin and loaches.

What is your tank maintenance schedule? What kind of filtration?

I have live-bearers (Guppies, Sword-tails, and Platties) along with 4 young Kuhili Loaches in my 20 gallon long tank. I was thinking that the Shubunkin would get too large in that tank...in addition, I'm guessing he would make a snack out of my fry.

I'm thinking about trading my Glass Cats back to the pet guy in exchange for some more Danios.

I'm pretty sure that my Plecos are clown Plecos.

I change out my water about 50 percent weekly, and I run an underground filtration system...in combination with my Loaches and Cory Cats digging through my substrate.

I just recently saw a large school of Glass Cats and I was fascinated! They were stunning in their unified movements.

Clown Plecos will be fine - they stay small, but yes, the goldfish and Dojos need to go.
