Hi all, just found this site today and already its been quite a bit of help..
In the process of setting up my my new tank after a break from fishkeeping of about five years, not sure why i left it so long, the interest was always still there..
Ive bought a 42" tank of about 37 gallons and am looking forward to keeping some of the smaller cichlids that are on the more peaceful side. Have never kept cichlids before and didnt realise just how big a classification it really is.
I think it will be a while before ive finally decided exactly what fish to keep as to be honest i am baffled..
Hopefully some of you can point me in the right direction, look forward hearing some advice and maybe some hot debate....

Welcome to AC Fraley! You've definately found the right forum to ask questions about setting up a cichlid tank! I'm guessing you're looking at dwarf cichlids since you mentioned "peaceful", any ideas yet?

Hi ya, I think dwarfs cichlids might be a good idea to start with as it seems they will generally get on better with other species. I like the bolivian rams and think the kribensis will be a good place to start as these seem pretty peacefull.. I also really like the jewel and jeweled cichlids. Looking through articles i find many fish i like and then read that they are from a certain location such as lake malawi or south america and can only be kept with similar, which can be frustrating.

While deciding on which cichlids you'd like to have, do a fishless cycle on that tank and save their lives and you from a ton of work. The post on how to do it is listed here in red.
