Hey guys, my 10g is nearly cycled.

I was thinking of a setup like this:
6 neon
6 x-ray tetra
3 otos

Thats 15 fish. My tank has plants and a large piece of driftwood that nearly cuts it in half.

If that is too many, I figure I'll have to choose between either the neons or the x-rays.

Also, how many fish can I put in at first? I was thinking 3.

Thanks

I would do one school or the other not both. How did you cycle? If you did it fishlessly with ammonia at 4.0 ppm to start, you could add all 6 at once.

I did an ammonia fishless cycle. When I add ammonia now, it drops pretty quickly, but the nitrites are a bit slower to go back to 0. They do eventually though. I am going to vacuum the tank tonight to get a bunch of crud out of it. Before I had ammonia, I was using fish food. After its vacuumed out again I'll add more ammonia to make sure that I did not disrupt the cycle.

So, if I only pick one schoo, then Ill probably do more like 8 or 9 and then 3 or 4 otos.

I have heard some people say 12-15 neons could fit in a 10g. Is that feasible or nuts?

If you have proper filtration!
If you do your weekly maintenance!
You should be fine with that!lol

northern has it right, like usual.
if you have enough media to support enough bacteria and water flow, and do water changes to keep nitrates under 40ppm. you're really only going to have to worry about stress from lack of swimming room and with neons since they school that's not really a problem.
also, if you love you tank you will be willing to have proper husbandry for it so if you REALLY want 14 neons and 3 otos, you can have them if you take care of them =)

Thanks for the responses. For those last two, were you speaking only for one school? Can I still do both the neons and x-rays? Thanks

My plants seem to be a good job sucking up nitrates. I am pretty happy about that.

Just a word of advice, the more of one breed tetra you have the more they will school- don't expect them (both breeds) to just instinctively school together. Some do, some don't.

Please stick with only one school in a 10 gallon. You can add 8-10 of one species and then 3-4 otos. Make sure though to get them fresh veggies when they run out of algae as algae wafers have more wheat and fillers than they do actual veggies.
