That's out of control, something must be WAY off, I don't think that's just from lack of water changes alone, do you?

In one of the pics, it looks like there is a dead rat in it!

See, the common misconception for planted tanks carried over from fish only tanks has been that excess phosphates and nitrates cause algae, but it's pretty clear from this photograph (and from recently published articles) that it is the IMBALANCE of various nutrients that causes algae. In this case, it was actually a LACK of phosphates and nitrates that resulted in the plants not being able to compete with algae.
Of course, this whole thing only applies if you have a planted tank and have fairly high light. In non planted tanks with low light, cutting off all nutrients period is still a decent strategy to get rid of the stuff
Anywhoo, lets get this topic back to chatterbox worthy. ;)

I've been thinking about starting another tank that would be planted, with plants being the main focus, and I was reading around that forum Chrona goes to, and I've realized that I have A LOT of learning to do, and A LOT more homework than I originally thought!

Yeah, planted tanks can be nuts. I can only imagine how long the learning curve for a full blown reef tank is
Indeed there DOES appear to be a rat in one of the pics. LOL

Reading this thread has been a total riot. That awful tank is just unbelievable and the "Enthusiast" who has it may be enthusiastic but certainly not in her fish tanks.
I hope she doesn't join this forum tomorrow and see this thread! hahahaha

I love how you chimed into that forum just to mention how it looks like there's a dead rat in that person's tank! What a mess that tank is anyway, how could you let it get that bad in the first place?!
