The original thread was getting a little bogged down.
I've purchased all the necessities to begin cycling the aquarium (fish-less of course) and have a couple more questions.
The fish I would like to make a part of my aquarium are as follows...
-Black Veil Angel (only 1)
-Panda Cory Cat
-Harlequin Raspbora
-Blue Cobra Guppy
-Freshwater Clam
1. Will these fish/inverts thrive together in the same aquarium?
2. Which fish should be added first after the cycle and in what quantity?
3. Will 20 pounds of sand cover 1 inch of an aquarium with dimensions of 30 x 12 inches?
Thanks again everyone.

I ould add the rasboras first than the corys. Then add the guppy. You will want to add the angel last.
Your guppy will probably get nipped at by the andel if not eaten.
Not sure about the clam.
20lbs of sand should give you at least that.

What kind of sand are you getting.
Don't get tricked into buy an expensive bag of aquarium sand unless your doing a planted tank.
I use play sand (the stuff for sand boxes) cost 3 bucks for a 50lb bag.

FW clams will just die and pollute your tank. There is simply not enough food in the water to feed it. Save yourself the trouble, besides that I like your stocking plan.

that sounds like a good stock of fish. and the 20 pounds of sand seems good enough for that size tank

Ok, so here's an alternate stocking plan...
Option A
-Black Veil Angel (1)
-Panda Cory Cat (3-5)
-Harlequin Raspbora (5-8)
-Blue Cobra Guppy (2)
Option B
-Blue Cobra Guppy (4-5)
-Panday Cory Cat (3-5)
-Harlequin Raspbora (5-8)
-Singapore Flower Shrimp (1)
Option C
-???
-???
-???

(If you guys have any suggestions for Option C feel free to post 'em)

What's the largest freshwater fish that could thrive in a 30 gallon aquarium?

You could do a pair of convicts. They would kill everything else in the tank when they breed so I think it will kinda be a waste of space. The pair I picked up are pretty active though and fun to watch.
You could do a single senegal bichir. I have a 7" one in my 55. They can be a little inactive though. They can eat feeders if thats something you would be into. Mine is pretty active and currently is doing laps around the tank.
You could also do a single firemouth. They get like 6 inches. I have 2 in my 55. Not sure how active it would be by himself though.(I'd wait for a second opinion on this one though)
Personally I would go for a bunch of small fish. Originally I was going to do an all tiger barb tank with my 29.. They are really cool and active. Thats what I would do personally.
