Hi all been away for a bit and back in the game now... lol basically no computer time is all... anyway ive acquired a new used tank... its a 90 48 by 18 by 24...planning on upgrading my 38 AC tank...working a few things out like the stand spent all day today constructing one... need to trim it up with some molding and then stain it and then good to go... tank is in the yard filled and chekcing it fo rleaks but its been good all day no probs...

question 1...when i filled it and looked at it later on... the water looks greenish through the glass... i gave the glass a good scrubbing with a large sponge with a delicate scotch brite on it... maybe itll be clear tomorrow.

Question 2. if there are no leaks tomorrow, im feeling confident i can put it in the living room... tanks has been dry for about 1-2 years... but the seams appeared soft and flexible to the touch... think they are ok...

question 3... the previous owner had partially melted and deformed the center brace is there a good way to replace or just leave it alone. what about getting the upper perimeter frame replaced... any ideas...

Its an old AGA with a serial number plate and everything...
Gonna put my Malawis in this bad boy.. cant wait.
Thanks for the replies all

heres some pics of the damage on the tank and the stand not stained but molding on... its a modified GARF stand... instead of just using screws to support the upper frame assy i added between supports made of 2x4 along the front edge and in the bak used scrap one by just to prived vertical support and not mechanical support from the screws only...I personnally dont think anything wouldve happened if i had done it his way. but i always think too much...
heres the pics:

the brace melting was from either an incadescent hood bulb or a halide hung too low over tank . if its still solid, it should do its job just fine.

i built my own stands too, yours looks great, it should work just fine. just be prepared to add shims if tank or stand rock back and forth [ mine did]
it could be caused by uneven floor or slight bow in wood.
love to see pic when set up.

Great job!
I love the color of the stain you used! What is it? lol
Keep an eye on that cross member.Someone posted a link to a guy that is the business of making tank trim.Apparently he is cheap and has good quality.
You could change the top trim without completely draining the tank.

rangur1 you should never shim a tank, only the stand! If its uneven under the tank get some plastic foam core for under the tank.It will give where it has too and your tank will be stable and never rock.

stain color is minwax red oak... my plan is topossible cut the center of the warp/melt out and leave 2-3 inches on each end. then take some alum or st steel and make 2 pieces one 2 3/4 wide onw 2 1/4 wide with the narrow piece tying into the plastic... if i nut and bolt with 2 nuts and bolts on each end then it will be fine. using the two different sizes will allow me to keep the step and use glass tops.

what you think sound good?

yes, the shimming implied was for under stand, NOT the tank, i thunk it. just forgot to actually write it OOOPPPS!!

if you add cichlid salts to your water, i don't know if you do, the salts could react with the metals. not near as bad as regular steel obviously, but cause some corrosion that would be hard to deal with. its a possibility you might want to check on.

ok heres the fix.
laminated sheets of polycarbonite together. then two nylon screws to make sure it stays under pressure... the glued overhang and filled the seams. when cured tomorrow will put 4 stainless steel screws and nuts throught he poly and the stand material what do you all think will it hold captain....
