what does it mean when the fish swim by a rock and bounce they're bodies off of it?

They're "scratching" basically

Check them for signs of ich first and foremost, then move on to other parasites if you dont think thats it.

How are your parameters?

Try adding minced garlic to their food.It helps fight off any parasites.
My fish flash once in a while but no ick yet!:19:
Its also a sign ick may be on its way.
Watch for salt grain size spots.

I have not changed anything nor have i added any fish in the past week. I have yet to do any test but i will shortly. Having a 17 month old running lose does not make for easy testing.

Little kids or not you need to test your water.

Are you saying I need to just go test my water and not worry about what my daughter is doing? I DID NOT SAY I was not going to test the water. But im also not going to just not be paying any attention to what she is doing or what she is getting into while im doing a water test. Please do not tell me to test the water OVER keeping an eye over what my child is doing. I realize that you are trying to help me and I do appriciate it but my child takes TOP PRIORITY over everything. Thank you everyone who tried to help me figure out what is going on. I truly do appriciate it.

IIRC, your fish are african cichlids, right? Sometimes they will flash like that as a way of marking territory. If you do not see any signs of ich and the behavior is infrequent it's probably not an issue.

I'd check your water parameters when you get a chance, though I agree that watching your child is a much greater priority.

If they're doing it often, then you've probably got ick.

my malawi cichlids do this flash deal once in a while-its a territory marking.
which i say because its done on same spots of certain rocks. it only happens occasionally, not often. just watch fish for 15-20 min when time allows and observe behavior . if there are problems, they will be apparent. good luck.

Fish just like to itch now and then like we do but constantly and you likely have Ick as already mentioned. Could be your nitrate are high which is why Smaug mentioned testing.

quick question how do you go pee?? thats about how long it takes to test your water. and you sould teach your child to help keep an eye on the fishies so they dont jump out while you test. i have a 20 month old and she is just fine for a few minutes while i test because she helps take care of them. she feeds them for me whether it be shrimp or pellets or blood worms. i let her put them in and then watch them eat it. I also tell her the fishies are happy cuz you take such good care of them. lol It's all about getting them involved so that way they are occupied while you can do other stuff in the same area. My husband works crazy hours and i do water changes with the help of my daughter who holds the tube for me in the bucket. or you could do it after they go to bed or for a nap. lots of ways to doit without ignoring the kid.
