I have been planning and researching equipment for a dream 180 gallon tank. The FX5 is at the top of my curiosity list for filtration (thanks again for the suggestion, reptileguy2717). I don't know much about these filters and am looking for as many additional comments/opinions as I can get. Anyone?

Yeah, that's pretty much what I'm saying. Price is not at all bad considering. Heck, I pay about that much for my Eheim 2028 filters at 1/3 the gph. BUT I am wondering about longevity/maintenance. My Eheims never break, clean them once every 3 months and I'm set. Sure hope someone will be able to give some feedback!

this may not help you much by i have a 305 and a whisper 60 on my 55. when i added my 305 and got it set correctly it did a number on my water. hell, i wish i had another one and get rid of the whisper 60. although i tell ya', that whisper 60 filter some water but it's not really capable of getting all of the real fine stuff out like the 305 can.

I have Fluvals from 8 or 9 years ago that are fine, never even replaced the impeller. I have seen the FX5 listed at just over 600 and just over 900 gph.

I imagine the 305 is similar to the Eheim 2028s that I use. Good that you have positive experiences with such.
