First off, hello. My name is Jordan. I live in Upstate NY and I am a 22 year old male. I apologize for annoying anyone with questions you have answered before, but this is so general that I didn't know how to search for it.

The backstory: A few months ago I started dating the girl I am currently with. She sort of unofficially moved in. She has a room at her mother's but she is never, ever there anymore. One of the last things to show up was her little gallon or so fish tank. She had three little black fish in it that I have come to know as Black Mollys. I have never really had fish, but her mother's house is full of them. Tanks and fish of all sizes are everywhere. She hinted that she wanted to continue the trend here, I consented, and the other day a ten gallon tank showed up that she had purchased at Wal-Mart showed up.

A couple days ago we went to the pet store and bought more. I had minimal input except to say what I liked, insist on a bottom feeder because I was under the apparently false impression that they cleaned the tank, and I also forced her to by pairs of every breed she wanted because I figured they'd want to be together. Otherwise, she chose on my $50 budget.

The tank: Now we have a ten gallon tank with stones on the bottom. There is an artificial plant and an artificial log with two plants sticking off of it. The fish are as follows: the three Black Mollys, two red Glofish, three neon tetras, two Painted Glassfish, and some sort of pleco bottom feeder that I can't pinpoint a species on. The tank has some sort of filter and a light. We run the light at night when we are home and keep it off during the day. She cleans the tank every two weeks.

What I know: I have learned some alarming things about the fish we bought. Neither the Glassfish nor the Glofish naturally have that luminescence, though the neon tetras do. The Glofish I have no issue with. The procedure, from what I have read, does not harm the fish in anyway. It is the result of a gene implanted in the embryonic stage and is purely cosmetic. I do have an issue with a corporation owning a gene, even if they created it, but that is a different story. The Painted Glassfish I do take serious issue with though. Injecting dyes that fade? It is awful to the fish and fraud to the consumer. No one or nothing wins. I will not buy more of them (with perhaps one exception) because I do not want to support this.

I also know that the pleco will outgrow this tank to the point that keeping it in it will eventually be a cruelty. For now though it is small, only a few inches long, and there is nothing I can do with it anyway. We only had 48 hours to return the fish. We'll get a bigger tank and I'll let more aquarium growth into my place when I am comfortable with how this tank is. I'll move it then. It just seems to hide in the log anyway. If we don't get a new tank in the next few months then I will find it a home at her mother's in one of her huge tanks.

Another problem I seem to have underestimated is the number of fish to have for each species. Plecos seems to be solitary, but I seem to need to get more of each breed to keep them in good mental health.

The glassfish are apparently not interested in the flakes she feeds them either. I also worry for the pleco's diet.

I know nothing of filters, lights. I'd like to have live plants in there but I know nothing of these either. I guess I'll just start asking anything I can think of.

Questions, questions, and more questions:

1. How many Black Mollys should I have to make them comfortable? Glofish? Neon Tetras? Glassfish? Plecos? Also, these are small fish, but would accomplishing these numbers overcrowd the tank?

2. If I can't find "unpainted" Glassfish, what should I do? I want the two of them to be comfortable in the tank, but I also don't want to support something that seems so cruel.

3. The Mollys, Neon Tetras, and Glofish seem to enjoy the flakes, but should I feed the Glassfish and Pleco? I would ideally like something for them to eat that would also supplement and provide variety to the diet of the other fish as well. Also, where would I find your suggestions?

4. Is there a difference between flakes labeled for goldfish and tropical fish? She is using goldfish flakes for some reason, but my gut tells me that nutritionally the flakes are probably the same and it is simply a marketing and coloring difference.

5. What filter/lighting set up would you recommend for a ten gallon tank?

6. How often should it be cleaned and if so with what, how? Is dish soap sufficient? What do we do with the fish in the meantime?

7. Live plants. Their water source is obvious, but how would they get the sunlight they need? Would the tank need to be by a window or would there need to be a specific light?

8. What sort of measuring instruments should we have for the water?

9. On the topic of the black mollys, the girlfriend is very attached to them. Do they exist in other colors? I imagine she'd like to be able to differentiate from the original three if we were to get more.

10. I imagine the tank will be overcrowded or at its limit when I am done with all this, but what other species do you feel would compliment this environment if/when we get a bigger tank? Or, on the contrary, do these species clash in any way?

11. What else should I know? I'd appreciate anything.

I take owning pets very seriously. I want to provide a suitable environment for these fish like I do for every other part I have owned past or present. However, these were sort of thrust upon me with the haste of the girlfriend. I've tried to research what mistakes we have made, but it was all so overwhelming. Thanks for your time and any, I mean any, help.

Haha... No, I didn't mean to give that impression. I want to have her here and I am very pleased with the set up. I also like the fish. I just don't want them to live a horrible life or to just turn around and die. If you knew us you'd be more likely to say that she needs to stand up to me sometimes than vice versa. I can be controlling, an unfortunate trait passed down from my mother that I have tried to, well, control.

Welcome to the Fabulous AC!.
You should call the store and see if they will take back the plecos. They need an established tank and are no good for cycling with.
If they won't take them her mother might until your tank is properly cycled.
Get some nice dirty media from her mothers filters while you are there and put it in your filter.Do not clean it.
Its a fast way to start your cycle.
Read the free ebook on the left! It will help you out.

Well you sure stumbled on to the right place! It sounds like your girlfriend scored if she likes fish, because someone actually knows how to some decent research! thumbs2:

I'll try to briefly hit on a few of your questions now: mainly tank size, lighting, substrate (I decided to tell you about this even though you didn't really ask and this is my opinion), and cycling (which is the most important thing you need to know about for healthy fish other than that you need water in the tank)

If you're looking for a larger tank, check craigslist in your area. I have seen tanks go on craigslist for 75-90% off all the time... I want to buy them all but I control myself and just keep my 29 gallon and 10 gallon.

As for live plants, they're great to have. They look good, the fish like them, and they keep the toxins down. If you're looking for lights, try checking out the store at [Only Registered Users Can See Links.] and get a t5 lighting set. T5 lights will be enough for anything you want to grow in there.

I also would recommend a sand substrate. Its easy to clean, looks great, comes in a variety of colors/styles, fish like to dig in it, and plants like it too. You can get by with the $4.00 50 lb bags of play sand at home depot if you take a few buckets and wash the clay out of it outside... or you can buy prewashed aquarium sand from the pet store for about $20 for a 20 pound bag. Underneath the sand you can also put a plant substrate for your plant roots.

You should also check out about cycling, it will save you and your fish a lot of stress.. sick fish are a pain to deal with (I know from experience). Long story short on cycling: your filter needs to mimic the nitrogen cycle that nature provides, and to do this it needs multiple types of bacteria, and it takes about a month to build these bacteria up in a filter from scratch, sometimes longer.

Cycling is important enough that there is an entire section on the forums here for it, and here is a link: [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

Some of your questions (since there are so many) may go unaddressed, but this isn't because we don't know or that we don't want to answer... so if we miss something make sure to repeat yourself so someone can get you the information!

P.S. as others have said, the ebook which can be found on the left, or at this link below has a ton of useful general information that is helpful to every new aquarium fish keeper.

Welcome to AC, and like previously mentioned you came to the right spot everyone here is very knoledgeable and would do anything to help. There are so many questions that answering them all would be impossible considering I'm using my phone lol but as mentioned before read the ebook alot of ur questions will b answered but I think right now cycling should be the focus of ur research. Good luck and welcome

Questions, questions, and more questions:

1. How many Black Mollys should I have to make them comfortable? Glofish? Neon Tetras? Glassfish? Plecos? Also, these are small fish, but would accomplishing these numbers overcrowd the tank?
Well mollys, tetras, glo and glass fish are all schooling fish. The more you have the happier the fish will be. I would say 6 is bare minimum.

2. If I can't find "unpainted" Glassfish, what should I do? I want the two of them to be comfortable in the tank, but I also don't want to support something that seems so cruel.
I wouldn't buy any more. It is a cruel practice. I would take them back and complain about the treatment and the "trickery" to the customer of the practice. But that's just my 2c.

3. The Mollys, Neon Tetras, and Glofish seem to enjoy the flakes, but should I feed the Glassfish and Pleco? I would ideally like something for them to eat that would also supplement and provide variety to the diet of the other fish as well. Also, where would I find your suggestions?
Flakes are an ok food source. Pellets though are usually better. Brands like hikari, nls, omega one are all good brands. Your pleco needs veges. He needs things like zucchini, cucumber, melon, spinach etc. are great. Online and your LFS (local fish store) will source the food. And I'm sure you know where to get vegies. :hmm3grin2orange:

4. Is there a difference between flakes labeled for goldfish and tropical fish? She is using goldfish flakes for some reason, but my gut tells me that nutritionally the flakes are probably the same and it is simply a marketing and coloring difference.
There can be a difference between foods - but I doubt there is much of a difference between flakes for goldies or tropical. Not enough to worry about anyway.

5. What filter/lighting set up would you recommend for a ten gallon tank?
You can just get basic lights from home depot stores. If you are happy with just low light live plants (of which there is a good variety and this is what I woudl suggest) you just need a basic fluro set up. As for filters you ahve a few choices - do you have room for an external filter? Is there room in the lid for a hang on back?
Whatever filter though you need it rated for about 10x the gallons of your tank. Also to help your fish get some filter media from your GFs mum, some nice dirty media - or if she runs any spare filters take it all, and put that media in your filter. This will help you get good bacteria quickly.(HOB)

6. How often should it be cleaned and if so with what, how? Is dish soap sufficient? What do we do with the fish in the meantime?
DON"T USE SOAP!!!!! Unless you just bought a second hand tank and are cleaning it for the first time, there is no need for soap. The filter shouldn't be cleaned in tap water, only tank water. Most of your good bacteria lives in the filter. Rinse your media in tank water. As for the tank, you need a gravel vac to clean the gravel and syphon water out. You basically start the syphon, and as it's syphoning the water out you dig the hose in the substrate and get any gunk out. You leave the fish in the tank for this process.

7. Live plants. Their water source is obvious, but how would they get the sunlight they need? Would the tank need to be by a window or would there need to be a specific light?
They get the light from the light on the tank. As I said above if your happy with low light plants (have a look at java ferns, java moss, anubias, for eg.) then all you need is a fluro set up. Between 6500K and 10000K plants grow. But for basic plants you just need a normal globe you woudl use around the house. You can get a lot more complicated with plants and then you need to balance CO2, lights and ferts - but I'd just keep it simple at the moment. The plants above will grow just from filtered light in the room. Heck they'll grow very slowly in near darkness ;).

8. What sort of measuring instruments should we have for the water?
I'd get at least ammonia, nitrItes, and nitrAtes at minimum. You can get a good master kit from API online for about $30. You want to make sure you use liquid test kits though and not paper dip ones.

9. On the topic of the black mollys, the girlfriend is very attached to them. Do they exist in other colors? I imagine she'd like to be able to differentiate from the original three if we were to get more.
Heaps of colours!!!

10. I imagine the tank will be overcrowded or at its limit when I am done with all this, but what other species do you feel would compliment this environment if/when we get a bigger tank? Or, on the contrary, do these species clash in any way?
Heaps of other species would complement. I'd move the pleco on unless your planning on a much bigger tank. Something like a bristlenose woudl be a better choice - they look similar but don't get anywhere near as big. The rest of the fish are fine together. You could add corydoras to the bottom, you could add gouramis, rams, kribs, man there is just too many options you could add!

11. What else should I know? I'd appreciate anything.
As the others said - read the ebook!
.
My answers are above in red.
Welcome to the forum - it is very refreshing to see someone doing research and trying their best to make a good environment for their fish. Feel free to ask any and all questions you have!!! :22:

Well, we're none of us perfect. Some moderators for example are control freaks :spam: If you were offended by my remarks then I apologize. If you weren't then I would like to see my post reinstated.

Perhaps her mom kicked her out because she wanted her room for more fish tanks :hmm3grin2orange: I've thought about kicking one of my roommates out so I can put a couple big tanks in there:ssmile:

If the store won't take the pleco back, you could put a posting on Craigslist and find it a good home.
