I have been at it for a year, so I don't know if I qualify as a beginner, but this is a stocking question so I thought it should go here.

A friend recently gave me a beautiful wooden ten gallon tank stand...a great excuse for another tank! I was planning on using this as a fry grow out tank, (the lfs will only take fry at 1 inch) which would be really cool because I only have two five gallons for fry (one has 7 four day old platies and the other currently has a betta) but I believe I am overstocked in my 29 gallon and I have to take care of the fish I have first.

I need to spread out my fish over the two tanks. My question is, how? I also have a few changes I'd like to make.

Here is what I want to have if possible:

5 black longfin tetras
4 gold barbs
5-6 neons
6 or so platys (two males, four females)
3-4 mollies (one male)
1 apple snail in each tank
4-5 ottos in 29 gallon and 2 in 10 gallon

I am thinking the platys in the 10 gallon w. the ottos and snail and everything else in the 29 gallon. I'd also like to keep a little room for any surviving fry to grow. I obviously can't save them all (where would I put them) but I can plant heavily or lay down a ton of java moss and maybe get some survivors.

You do have a problem and I can't see a real solution other than if you could locate your betta to a large vase, bowl, whatever, and keeping the fry in the 5 gallon. I don't know how much of a survival rate you'll have with fry and barbs in the same tank.

Wow, you need to add more tanks. Not sure how else to get around your situation. Hopefully someone else will be able to give you some more ideas/suggestions.
