View Full Version : dead rock straight into a cycled tank?

i have a ton of dead rock its been out of a tank for about 2 months can i put this straght in the tank? the tank is cycled been running for 3 months now since the rock is dead nothing on it to die it should be okay right can someone please let me know thanksthumbs2:

i have about 60pods of liverock i my ak riht now forgot to mention that

Depends on what you mean by "dead rock." If you are talking about live rock that was once in a tank, then no, you should cycle it separately, however it is dead in that it has never had any life on it and just white rock, they you would be fine.

Live rock that has been allowed to sit outside of a tank and "die" will still have lots of tissue on it that has simply dried up rather than broken down and decomposed completely. Any tissue on the rock that was once alive will be reconstituted in the aquarium and will break down causing ammonia and nitrite.

oh ok so i should just put it in a rubber maid tub with a heater for about a month or 2 right

That would the way to do it. And you'll want a power head.

should i buy 5 to 10 pounds of some live rock and dose it with calcium and that purple stuff for coraline

all that stuff in there with the dead rock ive been on here for a while and my 75g is doing great my digital cameras battery died on me ill get batterie tommorow and post some picks

Not yet. You need to cure the live rock first. Don't worry, the bacteria will establish itself no problem in that rock.

ok thats sounds good saves me some money ive investead so much at this point but its worth it to me just to sit back and look at every thing in my tank looks amazing thanks
