OK, these were sold to me as golden tetra (Hemigrammus rodwayi) but I've seen many different colors on photographs. Then I came across this:

Which seems to explain the difference.

So, can anyone reassure me? Are these golden tetra?

I personally don't have any experience with the "golden" tetra.....the pic you posted does have many of the features mentioned in the article but I am not seeing the golden marks above or below the black spot, that I believe I read in the article. Either way, they are very pretty and will certainly be a good addition to your tank:ezpi_wink1:

After a google search of golden tetra's on both image and article options, these look more like one of my neons that I am looking at right now, except for the red the neons have below the blue stripe, dunno, but all pics I found of golden tetra did not have the blue stripe.

Well, from a certain angle it has a vague golden sheen.

If it's not a golden tetra then what is it?

I found a site somewhere that has a blue tetra. They're very pretty and unusual and I would love some myself. Those look more like what you have than "goldens." I see no golden feature. I will search for those I found and see if I can locate it again.

You mean I was wrong again! Darn. LOL

This is what I thought it might be.

Blue Tetra Boehlkea fredcochui

Size: 2" max pH: 5.5 - 7.0 kH: 7 - 12 Temp: 64 - 84F, Origin: South American streams
Chemicals: Black Water Expert found at Aquarium Chemicals (http://www.azgardens.com/aquarium_chemicals.php)
Food: New Life Spectrum "Small Fish Formula" found at Fish Foods (http://www.azgardens.com/aquarium_food.php)
Another perfect tetra for any South American habitat aquarium. Very hard to find in the U.S. Is fair to moderate in difficulty to care for. Females are plumper and less colorful. Click here for a pic of a school (http://www.azgardens.com/images/Tetra-Blue-School.gif)of these gorgeous fish.

Funny. I thought a neon tetra had a red bar as well.

The regular neon tetras have a small red bar in the back too, but there are many color variations of "neon" tetras, like black neon, etc.

Try Golden Neon, has a blue stripe. Can't be sure on my monitor if it is a green or blue stripe.

Knodus borki (blue tetra) google that to see if that was what you had thought you were getting...
