View Full Version : Angel with a bent dorsal fin?

I've noticed that one of my angelfish has the top maybe 1/5th of his dorsal fin bent over sideways.

He is only about the size of a quarter not counting his fins. When I first got him I noticed his dorsal fin was kinda flat instead of the typical I guess arrow head shape and I assumed it would grow and fill out. It kind of looked as if someone gave him a flat top. Recently it has started growing noticeably but as I said it is bent over.

The thing is he is currently in a understocked 55 gallon aquarium with plenty of room. So I know it isn't due to him being cramped. I do weekly 30 percent water changes and all my water parameters are perfect.

Is it possible that it could be genetic? I'm certainly no expert but is it possible to trim the bent part off and have it grow back straight? I'm just really puzzled.

could've been picked on when he was a baby. cuz i've noticed that ones of the babies platies in my tank is bent halfway down her back. the only answer i can come up with is that some fish tried to eat her and couldn't get her down it's throat, so she is bent.
i don't think trimming it off would help, i think that would jsut extremly stress out the fish.

Let it heal on it's own. I wouldn't cut it off. That would be an insane amount of stress on the fish.

Do you happen to a have a picture?

You should read through this post.

Likely something similar, probably a super veil that didn't have enough room as a fry. It's pretty common with rookie breeders.

I have one that was picked on when it was about US quarter sized. Ever since then it's had a permanent crick in its top fin. It's now full sized and that fin never does stand straight up. It also looks like he's been creased in the head with a lead pipe. He's not the prettiest angel I've seen.

Hi
i have seen this when i first started breeding angels, this is caused by not enough nutritional food when it was fry. i have kept some of these and have never had any trouble with them even when breeding them, the young do not seem to have this passed down to them.
hope this helps
Tony

Yeah my guess is that it wasn't given adequate room to grow out in.
