ok - so given i have time to prepare for my 75gal - i have run into another idea for the stocking scheme and wanted to run it by you guys....

so - i have adjusted my plan from discus/angel fish + plecos - to the following

1: 50-100 neon tetras (depending on how much a 75gal can handle)
2: 4-6 plecos (varied species all in the 4-6" range)
3: 4-8 freshwater crabs + potentially 1 blue crayfish

what do you guys think?

i think a huge school of neons would look fantastic! and pretty much all their waste and by-food would get scavenged by the crabs + plecs....

i think it could make for a great display!

Plecs and crabs don't eat waste. I would suggest 30-40 neons, as 100 would be way overstocking. Actually, I would suggest no neons at all, get cardinal tetras and acclimate them slowly. They look much better imo, and are much hardier once aclimated. Crabs and crayfish.....dunno....I've heard of aggression against other fish, not sure how they'd do with plecs and neons. I would also recommend some centerpiece fish, maybe some dwarf gouramis (1 male + 2 females)

I prefer neons, myself. I would love to fill my little 10 gallon with them. I think with a 75 gallon you have a lot of choices, tho, and possibly would like a wider range of fish. Silver Dollars are nice community fish as well as the red-tail rasbora's. You have lots of ways to go and could still have the neons as well.

As long as you overfilter your tank you shouldnt have to worry about overstocking. The plecos dont scavenge so they wouldnt be picking up the waist.

You could get a big school of cory cats that would look awesome.

I'm agreeing with everyone else...

30 neons or cardinals...

NO Plecos - common plecos get to be 2' long!!! Get 6-10 corys instead...
NO Crabs or Crayfish...they'll eat the neons/cardinals...

Bristle nose catfish. Do the job but stay small.

You may get by with the crabs not eating the Neons, But I have a Crayfish and I can tell you it will catch in minutes anything that is less then half the Crayfishes size.

This is a perfect example of how filtration will significantly impact your stocking capacity. You could probably get away with your original suggestion (as long as you stay away from plecos that grow very large, and minus the crayfish who would definitely eat other fish) if you significantly overfilter. Maybe a large canister plus a large HOB. A school of neons that large would be quite a sight. However, I also have to agree with some of these posts--that size tank allows you a great range of possibilities. I say go with what you desire. Now you have me thinking about what a huge shoal of neons would look like!
