What is a good food for snowball plecos? Can they survive on algae from the tank or do they need more food?

Welcome to the forum. Hypancistrus inspector, which is the scientific name for your fish, is primarily a meat eater, not an algae eater, though it will nibble at it. You should feed him shrimp pellets, blood worms and sinking pellets designed for bottom feeders. Also, you can feed him pellets that have a large percentage of Spirulina in it.

All plecos like to have some driftwood in their tanks also.... even if they don't eat the wood, they'll benefit from the tannins and awfuchs...
