pot or not?

I want to put plants into my cichlid tank and i've been doing research about the deep rooted ones and while i was about to buy a echinodorus red mellon it asked if i wanted it potted or rooted. now i have a jd, gt and oscar who are all diggers. so heres the question would a plant in a pot be able to stay in the pot and grow? cuz to me if i could put them in the substrate down a few inches but leave them in the pot then my fish should not be able to up root them?

Please do not double-post. I think leaving it in the pot with an open bottom should allow it to root without the fish digging it up.
