An inch of substrate isns much so you may have trouble getting swords to root at first but they will grow fine once they do.Anubis of any kind especally coffefolia are cool and do well with most any light.Crypts look good as well.

Java fern, various mosses would do well. I would add more substrate if you want to do rooted plants and stems.

3 inches sound good?

2-3 inches is perfect. Slope it from back to front, it will give the tank a nice sense of depth.

If you're new to plants your best bet is to pickup a variety pack somewhere. This will give you a good idea which plants will grow and which won't. You could go out and get a handful of one or two species but if they die then it's a waste. With a variety pack, you will probably lose some plants but you'll get a pretty good idea what likes your tank.
