Ok i know that i should worry about the fish i have now and i am its just that i am going to ask a lot of questions from you guys about other fish since i want to further my knowledge of my new hobby. First Question are oscars really hard to keep or do you just need a really big tank with a really big filter with some effort. oh and i have a topfin 10 on my ten gallon is that a good filter for it or no

I know it is way to small and i was just wondering if it is a good filter i know that if i would get a oscar in like a 6 months it would be in atleast a 55 gal

Your 10g filter isnt good enough for a 10g tank, so you'll def have to upgrade it for a 55g.

I have been planning to its just that i have to wait till christmas i have tryed to convince my parents and grandmother to buy me one on craigslist but they said no i think my parents want to get me to have a awesome christmas present so they will probably get me something bigger than a 55
I would wait until you get your tank before you get an oscar. I would ask for a 75+ because a 55 is a bit to small of tank for the oscar. I would also think on investing into a bigger filter for the 10.

I have kept oscars. Fairly easy to keep as long as you have more than enough filtration, as these guys are MESSY. Other than that, just give them maybe a 75+ gallon tank and lots of good foods and there are no other real special requirements for this species.

Yup lots of water changes, lots of filtration, lots of room. A 55G really is too small for an oscar, speaking from experience here, my oscar is in a 55G and it REALLY is TOO small! A 75G would be much better. (i'm hoping to rectify the situation at my place in the not too distant future)
They are a really really really awesome fish though, they have great personality. They really are a dog in a tank I think, LOL. They are VERY VERY messy, you feed them and they spit half it out their gills, even whole pellets come back out the gills, not just bits. They love re-arranging the tank. They move decorations, they move rocks, they move driftwood. My guy, or girl, don't know :), loves pulling the leaves of plants, whether they be real or fake. You put a plant in there and the next morning, all the leaves are either floating at the top, or sitting at the bottom and the plant it nude.
He ALWAYS wants food. He dances at the glass for you so you'll give him food, or if you aren't paying attention, he's bang on the glass with the base of the fake plants, or spit gravel at the glass to get you attention, then he'll dance. Or if you really aren't paying attention, he's jump at the lid. I've had to sit stuff on the glass so he doesn't send it flying! (Someone on here, can't remember who (maybe jbeining), had actually used velcro to keep the lid on his oscar tank, which is a really good idea me reckons! LOL)
They really are a top fish, but lots of room, lots of filtrations and lots of water changes are essential.
