Well, the common belief has been that ammonia removers are bad for the cycling process because they absorb ammonia needed for the bacteria, but apparently this is not the case (at least with this particular product) The ammonia locked in the media is still available to nitrifying bacteria, and thus is a good idea to keep ammonia levels in the tank down until bacteria can keep up.

Just goes to show that fish-keeping is still a largely uneducated hobby that is constantly gaining knowledge.
