I'm picking up a new stand for my 180 predatory comm. tank tomorrow and i'm trying to get everything prepared for the move. My only real concern is moving my 21+ inch Silver Arowana...she is a powerhouse and loves to jump. The last time I moved her she was about half this size and it was a challenge back then. I have a bunch of large rubbermaid totes that I plan on using to transfer all of the fish and as much water as possible. Does anyone have any suggestions that may help make this go as smooth as possible. I've moved MANY fish in the past...just not on this magnitude.

If she likes to jump you could put her in something with a cover and tape it on or get a cover with a clip until you're ready to put her back in. Otherwise I can't really help.

I think pretty much anything you do is going to be extremely challenging. You've got some pretty big fish there.

What have you got for a net?
Have you handled that one lately?

If the tank is drained very low, the aro will not be able to jump. At this point you could probably scoop her up in your hands and transfer her right to your tote.

All of the totes are able to be zip tied shut. My main problem will be getting them into the totes. I want to avoid netting them if at all possible...I was planning on chasing them into large plastic bags, then moving them into the totes. I have moved all of the Gar and most other fish...the Arowana is my big concern.

Crispy - This Arowana jumped out of a 75 gallon tank with 3" of water in the bottom when she was 14" long (I tried your idea when I moved her into the 180). Maybe drain it until she is on her side, then grab her with a wet towel? She totally freaks out when she feels cornered.

After losing my Rhom today...I would really hate for this to not go as planned.

Your wet towel idea a draining the tank down is great idea. You will have to be quick about it though!
Good luck! I used a minnow net to scoop my oscars when I transferred them.

That's probably the route I will end up going. I'll just throw the wet towel over her, then grab her (sounds easy). I wont be moving them until Saturday (I'm out of town on work most of this week). If anyone feels like they have a better idea please let me know.

HAHA! I'm sure i'll get soaked! Unfortunately the stand got sold out from under me, so it will take longer than expected. I'm in the process of building a new stand now. I'll keep you all updated.

I have almost finished building my new stand for the 180, so the move should be coming this weekend...if all goes well. I'll update as it comes!

I moved the tank onto the new stand today! Everything went better than planned and I am very please with the results! I'll try to get some pics up tonight!!!

Already moved her bud. I ended up lowering the water and using a hefty bag. Went smooth as pie!

Thanks! It was a LOT of work, but was well worth it! I've been reworking the aquascape a little and am looking for a new strip light that fits better and matches. The 4' oak strip light just is not cutting it!

Northernguy - She is almost 22" long now. The two Gar in the tank are about 18".

Thanks! I changed my mind last second and went with a white garbage bag (when you have to move yours I would suggest the same). With the bag being white she couldnt see anything, so she didnt freak out at all. It honestly could not have gone any better. Out of the entire move...not a single fish got a ripped fin or scrape!

Just for laughs...here is a picture from the weak we first got her!

16012

This picture brings back a TON of memories! Back when she fit in a 29 gallon tank, ate gut loated "pin head" crickets, and got full from eating one of them!!! Now she can eat over a dozen whole shrimp in a sitting + my hand!!!
