I just found a guy selling this set up.... Let me know what you think, it's about an hour an a half drive to pick it up, but it definately seems worth it.

$150
45 Gallon Tank
Magnum 350 Filter and Tubing
2 Power Heads
Seaclone Protein Skimmer
Dual Satelite Fixture
Stand

I think it'd be worth it, me and my roommate have a 30 gallon that we were gonna start, but after researching decided that 30 gallons would be to small in case of disease and water problems. Would the 45 be a better tank, or should we hold out and wait for a bigger???

umm, thats definitely a good deal...and also depends on how much room you have. If you buy this and a another good deal arises involving a larger tank, would you have room for both? If not i say wait for a bigger tank deal, you'll be happier in the long run.

Well we've kinda decided that 60 is the biggest we'd ever go. Just cause of the cost of live rock and substrate. But this deal arose, but being 45 I'm just wondering if it's going to be big enough to be forgiving as far as if a fish dies an how much that would effect the water. I know how touchy saltwater is.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna take it. It's not quite the 55 I was hoping for but oh well, with all the equipment how can you beat that price?

Well, the 45 is a good deal. Me personally, I have always thought that I would always go with the largest possible if i were to start a SW tank, for the reasons you've stated, not to mention the beauty it can add to a home.

Ultimately it's up to you big guy!

Good point... I think for two starving college students, 45 will be enough

hmmm. If moneys tight, salt isnt always the way to go. fish are on average 20$ and anenomes 50$. Lights are also expensive. As long as you can get the equipment, go for it.

That was a exageration. We are well aware of the costs, we've been reading books for the past 2 months and doing all kinds of research. It's definately more expensive than freshwater, but if done smart, I think we can pull off a great looking tank. Plus the expense is over time.

An the other great thing about that package, it comes with the lights! Pickin it up tomorrow night.

Cheapest live rock I have found is on liveaquaria.com and is supposed to be really good. I think their premium Fiji 45 pound box is $180 shipped, that's under $4 a pound and the rock is supposed to be really good.

My LFS sells it for $3.99/lb, so I think we're going to go with that. But thanks for the advice on that site!

I would only do that if the rock is really good, which the liveaquaria stuff is. I doubt it is any good if the LFS is selling it for $3.99/pound.

I second that. My LFS has LR for 7-8 bucks/lb and it doesn't have as much coraline algae coverage as Liveaquaria stuff. It looks rather dull actually, even if they DO call it "premium Fiji rock"

They've actually got one of the most amazing tanks I've ever seen using that very same stuff. I'm sorry that it's not more expensive??? Maybe I can go in an pay them more for it.

But yeah... this thread was about some tank equipment, which I'm pretty excited about. We're driving down tonight to go and pick it all up. Exciting.

You can find deals and if this is one, go for it. I am just saying with stuff like live rock you usually get what you pay for, so I would be hesitant about rock that cheap. Their tanks may be amazing, but that may be after adding corals, inverts, and maybe selecting the best rock that comes in to the store, that kind of stuff.

Did you get all the info on the equipment?

Most of your local classifieds will have people selling liverock for 5$/lb

Funny how tanks just pop up left an right. We'd planned on driving down to Santa Barbara this evening to pick up that tank... But my roommate's coworker decided to sell us his. He's got a 40 gallon with epuipment he had on a 180 gallon and it's full of live rock and has an eel in it. So once I get over the flu (thanks to the gf for that) I'm gonna go pick that up and not have to drive 90 minutes.

I know what you're saying about the live rock, every lfs here is at $4/lb, from looking at them, they all seem to be good quality stuff. But now that doesn't even matter because we're getting an established tank. Sweeeeeeeeet
