Get a second opinion but I think as long as its dead, it should be ok. After all, sand is sand. lol

go to your local hardware store and get a few bags of playsand. i pay 3.70 a bag for 50# of quikcrete playsand. just remember to was the he** out of it before you put it in the tank

Sand is not sand, sadly. Most "saltwater" sand sold today contains aragonite, which will raise your pH. This is fine if you're doing an African tank, but not so desirable otherwise. Even if you wanted an African tank, the cleaning process you'd have to go through would, I think, make it prohibitive.

On the bright side, there are 2 much more simple options. Pool Filter Sand and Play sand, both of which can be found at Lowes/Home Depot/etc... for ~10$ for a 50lb bag.

I just got a 55 gallon and put 1 bag of play sand in it. Cost me 2.70 for 50lbs. I learned the hard way. Wash it really really good before adding it to the tank.
