I have six neon tetras and only five of them school together, there is one lone tetra who can most likely be found behind my lava rock at the far end of the tank. He never schools with the others, but has appeared to be healthy for several months now. I'm not sure what to think about it.

If he looks ok and is eating I would not worry about it.

I've had issues with the occasional non-schooling neon. Typically they just do their thing off by themselves. As long as the fish looks good I wouldn't worry. Sometimes adding more neons will help bring the school together. For a while I actually had two separate schools of neons in my 29G tank. I added another group and suddenly everyone swam together.
