Thought I'd make a thread for my dad showing a few pics of his tank, which now has a few rocks and plants in it (oh, and a "bubble lawn" :P)
(please excuse if the photography isnt the best - I'm using my dad's cam which I'm not 100% familiar with since I bought my cam)

Love the tank. Not too full of stuff and just the perfect level of decorations and colors.

We've added more decorations and planted most of the plants (taking them out of their tubs, etc) and added another 'bubble curtain' and a small bridge. Updated photos:

Thats a really nice tank. Are those plants real?
They look real, but they are so perfect, that i am doubting what i am seeing.

Yes, They are real, now I just have to find out what they are. i know the one is a Brzilian sword or something like that. I I can't find out I'll post some pics and maybe one of you guys will help.
Thanx 4 the compliment.

I would recommend taking the bubble curtains out, as they rob the plants of CO2, which is already pretty low. The plants themselves will add plenty of oxygen to the water once they start growing. Nice tank!

How about if I try for a win win situation. If I switch the curtain on for only an hour or two a day. It looks so cool along the yin yang line. How would this affect things?

That should be ok. Try to do it early or late during the photoperiod (which should be about 10 hours, no more than 12, btw)

Ok well we put in 10 neon tetras yesterday but one is not well :( This morning he was arbing about by himself and when we finally decided to feed them a LITTLE this morning, he didnt care for any food :( Then, as the others were feeding, he just sunk down slowly to the bottom, nestled himself inbetween a rock and the glass and that's where he's stayed :( He's still breathing, but its so sad :(
Here's a pic I took yesterday when they were settling in:

Only one has been named, and his name is Shubert - cant point him out in this pic, though I think he's the one on the far left, kinda facing away from the camera....

Great looking tank, don't ditch the air curtain entirly, it sets it off.
I love how you have 10 neons and can tell them apart, thats dedication:thumb:

Lol no, as I mentioned, only one has a name lol and only cos he (she?) is the most recognisable one out of them all haha but knowing my dad, he'll name them all at some stage while sitting for hours watching them :P
Shame, the sickly one died fairly quickly, and dad and I buried him (her?) in the garden... :(

Lol yes well it *did* take two of us to bury the one fish :P Shame though, dad tipped his hand to drop the fish into the hole, and the fish landed on the ground beside the hole...poor thing didnt have a very dignified send-off lol

I loved your dad's tank - although I must admit i liked it better before you added in the bridge... the first picture you posted was just superb.
On another note, as sad as the death of your tetra was and the "funeral", I have a really weird story that may make you smile in this time of grief :-S :
We used to live in a rented apartment in New Delhi, India. I wa married at the time and I had just got my first tank ( unplanted, 20 gallons) I kept goldfish. (surprise surprise) anyway, one day, one of them died..I cried..mourned the death of Oscar (I had named him) and then buried him in a patch of land in our back yard.
Over the next year, quite a few of Oscar's tank mates died... I couldn't stand the thought of all these funerals... so I would cry (sigh...yes) and then I'd ask my husband to bury the dead fish. And on "All soul's day" I used to put some flowers on their " graves"
Then came the time when we were going to move houses... when we were packed, I went to the bath room...and got the shock of my life!!! The pot (comode) had a flower on the seat! I called my ex-husband and he laughed... then he made me sit down... and he told me that he was getting tired of all the "funerals"... so he used to just flush them down the toilet!!!!! Putting the flower was his way of apologizing to them!!!!!!
I think it was 2 weeks before I recovered.
Hope that made you smile... as angry as I was when I found out...it does make me smile sometimes... especially when I think of all the alll soul's days I laid flowers on those "graves"....

Soulmia, shame thats so sad lol but it did make me laugh lol. I'm pretty sure my dad buries the ones I dont know about, cos the one time after the one fish died, I saw him coming back from the "grave area" on his own, so I'm pretty sure he buries them.
Still, I wouldnt be surprised if I start laying flowers on a few fake "graves" eventually lol.
Thanks frizzlefish :) Oh and on the subject of the bridge, I wasnt too fond of it in the beginning, but its grown on me....
Hmm, come to think of it, there arent any updated pics in this thread...
Let me find an updated pic quick.....*rushes off to photobucket*

Are you planning a background?
Tails

We're looking to build our plants up to cover the entire back of the tank (think: lush plantage :D)....its taking a while though, lol, so we might add some more plants to help it along :P
Why do you ask? :)
We were a little like "fish out of water" so to speak haha when starting the tank, as we've never been very involved with real plants...my goldfish tank only had plastic plants in it haha, so we went on a) what my cousin suggested, and b) what funds we had readily available which is why we have so few plants to begin with (I would imagine someone wanting a lush background would start with double the amount of plants we have...?)

Well, because I had a difficult time figuring out what to use for MY background. (I started another thread on it)
I liek the visual of other's tanks so I can see things to use as ideas for my own. I'm a visual learner!

Easiest plants to act as a dense background are just stem plants like stargrass, wisteria, ludwigia, ambulia, anacharis, or maybe even a big bundle of java fern or amazon sword. Here's a pic of my tank. The idea is to actually leave a bit of negative space instead of having the plants cover the whole background. Looks better that way imo. Black background btw. Anything else looks hokey imo.

You added another "bridge" or...?
I am also a newbie in setting up a planted tank.... I have had an aquarium before.. it was an unplanted 20 gallon tank and over a period of 9 years, I kept everything from goldfish to cichlids… I also have three betas – they’re called: Rainbow, Hero & Jaws!!! :hmm3grin2orange: I will be getting the 4th Betta this weekend… (I’m now praying my boyfriend doesn’t dump me!! :41:)
I started a thread when I was thinking of stocking my tank…. It has pics of my tank just when it was planted…and today, I added fish!!! It has pics on the 1st page and last... Do check it out and let me know what you think!: [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]
I think your dad and I may be soul mates in the “grave visit” situation :hmm3grin2orange:
Cheers,
Natasha

Chrona, yes thats the effect we were going for! What are the little plants at the front?? Love those!!
Soulmia, lol, yes we added a Roman Arch haha! The fish love it (all our algae eaters, esp Darrell and Darrell, LOVE the archway - they've made it their territory!) and the swordtails and neons love swimming through it :)
Your tank is nice and green - love the rock! How are those lines on the rock though?

The small plants in the front center is marsilea hirsuta. The small plants on the left is dwarf hairgrass. The spikey plant in the front right is blyxa japonica, which I have since moved to the side because it does get pretty big.
