View Full Version : Renewed Faith in Wal-Mart

I came home to one of my fish having a case of Ick. Because of the time, my only option was my local Wal-Mart. After reading the horror stories on here, it wasn't my first choice, but unfortunately my only. So when I walked into the fish department, I was pleasently surprised. A completly stocked display of medications, food, water treatment etc. etc. The tanks were all looking healthy, all had gravel an some sort of decoration, I overheard the "fish" guy telling a customer that was buying a tank, that he first needed to cycle the tank before adding any fish. I then talked to him for a while and surprisingly it sounded like he knew what he was talking about. He then went through all the tanks making sure there were no dead fish or anything and went about his business. I ended up buying a Tetra Whisper Air Pump and Air Line, and the 5" air stone as well as the Ick Med's. I've seen other Wal-Marts sad excuse for a fish department, but tonight I was pleasently surprised by this one.
P.S. I still will be using them as a last resort.... Can't beat the personal relationship you get at the LFS.

Not all wal-marts are too bad. But to cancel out 1 bad wal-mart, you need 100 good ones, and that type of ratio is COMPLETLY unreachable. Most people with knowledge of fish work at LFS, not walmart.
This has sparked an idea in me. I am going to go to my walmarts and "interview" (without them knowing) some of the "fish" department workers. I am going to ask all sorts of questions, and see how many give me an intelligent answer.

Haha... Good luck with that. Yeah, it wasn't a fun trip having to go there. Maybe we should submit letters to our congressman to pass a bill to have LFS's open past 6pm.

When I find a situation that totally pleases me, I ask to speak with a manager to commend them on how well the person working that area is doing.
We are so fast to comdenm what we don't like and say nothing when we see things that are done well or a person is doing a good job. Having been in management for some time, I know they like to hear the good as well as the bad.
If this person is a good worker and doing a good job, take a minute to give him the pat on the back he deserves. Not many WalMart employees deserve as much.

I agree with hobbs. Do take the time to comliment, before you take the time to condemn.

same. My wal-marts ditching fish, but got a huge tank shipment in. They have 55g, 29g, 10g, and 5g, and 2g kits, and in november/december they have 75g square tnaks.
My Wal-Mart is the only choice I have unless I want to drive a couple of hours. There is a LFS but the store is filthy. Last time I was in there, I almost gave up on fishkeeping altogether.

Pssh... That's just not fair. I've gotta get in my truck after work and speed to mine if I want to get something. An then one of the guys every time is like "Is there anything I can help you with before we close at 6!" ouch....

From what I've heard, the one near me is open 24 hours. Cant' confirm this, since the latest I've gone in there is around midnight. the clerks working in the fish area aren't very knowledgeable, but some of them do know enough not to combine goldfish with cichlids when a customer wants to do this. I was also pleasantly surprised to see that they stocked melafix, and sometimes primafix, and for a whole lot cheaper than my chainstore lfs!!

I wish my lfs was that smart. goldfish, plus peruvian snails, plus bala sharks in a tank.
