I got my canister filter today, (a fluval 305), now what?
Can I just get it up under my stand? Or do I need to get like a plastic container to set it in to keep it from overflowing?
I have ZERO experience with this (yet to even open the box because I just got home, haha), but I wanted to get opinions on how everyone operates with their canisters.

How about opening the box and reading the instructions, that will help you a bunch! :hmm3grin2orange: If you have any specific questions after that feel free to post them up!
Not sure if the 305's do but my Fluval FX5 came with a DVD that explained setup/maintenance/trouble shooting.

Lol, I dont have questions about the filter guys, lol. =)
Maybe I phrased it wrong.
I don't need help setting it up or anything, I just wanted to ask those who have experience using canisters if they just leave their canister as is sitting on a shelf or something, or if they set it in a plastic tub or something of the sort in case water leaks?

I'm a first time canister user myself and I've just got it in the stand cabinet. I figure if it's going to start leaking, the whole tank will syphon out if I'm not around to catch it. A bucket, at that point, becomes usless.
Congrats and good luck!!
*edit* just thought of something....the newer modles may or may not come with an anti-syphon thingy. So that way if...well I dont know if that would do any good....it may. I've seen people's setups and sometimes there is a tray or something that can hold the contents of at least the canister.
I'm probably wrong though.!!

I placed my own in the tank cabinet. No tub or anything.
It does need to be placed below the tank level so make sure not to put it on a shelf that is equal to or higher than the tank itself as that will cause extra stress on the motor resulting in poor flow or it might not work at all. ***Directly under the tank is best.***

I have mine in a plastic container under my tank.
It does catch any drips or spills when I work on it.
