View Full Version : Are GBRs for me?

I would like to add something a bit different to my main tank since the Angels are gone. I might also take some of what is there now out. Haven't made up my mind so I'm looking at some idea.

GBR's were one of my ideas so I figured I'd run my tank by you all and let me know what you think it would take to add 2-4 to my set up.

Thanks all!

80 gallon bowfront with fake plants and DIY background and sand substrate.
8 Zebra Danios
9 Cardinal Neon Tetras
3 Albino Bristlenose Plecos
8 Lyretail Mollys
11 Rummynose
4 Plattys
1 oddball tetra (maybe a lemon) that stowed away with my rummys when I got them

tests are all where they should be and the tank has been up and running for almost a year. I do have a bit of green water here and there but nothing a WC doesn't normally take care of.

here's a pic of the tank and the caves and plants. Like I said the Angels are gone.

Thanks for any opinions and thoughts all!

IMO GBRs will be fine with your other fish. They tend to stay close to the bottom. I don't see a problem with four at all.

What happened to your angels?

GBRs will love that tank. I forgot about that awesome structure thing you made.

Thanks King!

are there any other Dwarf types that might do better, go better...

Most types of apistos would work equally as well. Kribs would work too, but I've seen them become pretty evil when they spawn.

I have a pair in my 30 gallon long. I really enjoy them. I've not found them to be overly aggressive. They need clean conditions so I've increased my water changes to twice per week. This seems to stress them less than doing one huge change a week.

I was worried about adding them to my tank because my pH is pretty high at 7.6. I drip acclimated them for 5 hours and they are doing great.

I've had them a couple months and they've spawned twice (no babies either time). I did read that eggs will not be viable in such a high pH. Don't know if that's true. Algenco is the resident expert on Rams. Hopefully he's reading this thread and will post his opinion.

GBRs, most apitos, could go in the tank. I don't think kribs are a good choice, just because they get pretty mean when spawning.

Thanks all! thumbs2:

I was going to ask about ph next... mine is about the same Karen. But all my fish seem to do just fine with it so I'm not too concerned about it. With having such high ph I've learned to be very patient with getting new fish in the tank. Takes me a good 3-4 hours.

What is an Apisto?... (blush)

ok so could I put few different types? Say I wanted to add 6... 2 of each type? or 3 of two types?

my g/f wants to know if there are any purple or bright yellow ones...?

so with that could anyone suggest a couple different types?

Thanks again for all the help everyone! thumbs2:

Any more advise from anyone? thumbs2:

I'm just not having a lot of luck searching... I'm sure I'm missing something dumb... lol I keep getting a lot of info on the big guys. (that I'm really starting to really like...)

Pretty much just looking for opinions on what kind of combos would go ok together.

Thanks again everyone!

Most female apistos become bright yellow when in the mood. So a trio of dwarf cockatoos and a pair of rams might just do the trick. A mix of bolivians and gbrs would be nice as well.

I really enjoy the Bolivian Rams but German Blue rams have that intense color!

i have heard, elsewhere, that GBRs like a warmer tank than most tropicals... is this true?

i have been eyeballing a pair of GBRs at the LFS.... perhaps if i could get a setup for them, and a few tank mates..........

what would a good setup (gallons and filters) be for 4 GBRs, some cories, and a school or two of middle level fish?
