sorry to re-post but need some help here.....

ok guys - i have another small tank going --- 15gal

filter is a filter box(on top of tank) which is fed by a powerhead --- and returns to tank via pipe (which i extended so it goes directly into the water) -- i know....this might hurt aeration as there are less bubbles - but the powerhead seems to be doing a fine job creating surface agitation.....

ok, so my question is simple - how much/what kind of filter media should i put in the box?

1) should i cut out a rectangle so it completely covers the entire bottom of the filter box area?

2) i bought some material (remember i am in china and have only 2-3 options here) -- and it looks like a sandwich --- 1 layer white (cottonish stuff), middle is a thick black sponge type layer, 1 layer white stuff (diff. from the cotton stuff).....

sorry to be vague....but everything is in chinese and i don't know what is going on.....

reason i ask: before i got the 3-layered sponge material - i had basic filter cloth - and when i layed 1 skinny layer down covering the entire bottom of the filter box - the water would not drain quick enough once the exhaust hole area become slightly clogged.....so i am wondering with a sponge (because it has layers) if although i cover the entire bottom, clogging will not occur because of the multiple layers, etc....????

Sounds fine what you have in mind. I'm sure the force of the water pushing out pulled that floss downward clogging things up for you.

I would agree with that. I wonder if the black middle layer is carbon? Hope it works for you. I wonder if you could find, as an option, some open-celled foam and cut it to fit in the filter box? Just a thought.
