I went for a walk near some rapids today and saw this big snapping turtle trapped under a railing that was installed near the walk way.It was jammed in there real tight! We had a wild thunder storm last night,I think it got stuck in there then looking for cover.I used my foot to move it first but found out the dangerous end was still working very well.I used a stick but he wanted more! lol. I pushed it out and then pulled from behind! They have a long friggin neck!lol I pointed him to the water and let it go on its way.

WOW that's a big one. Turtles can live over a hundred years so who knows how long that guy has been around. Good job freeing him. Big snappers like that can take a finger right off.

Wow! That is one big turtle! Is that an alligator snapping turtle or is it a common one?

lol It almost got a toe!
It did get the stick! It had a shell about 18-20" long! Its just a common snapper but they do get huge!

I was out on my bicycle the other day and came across a good sized box turtle trying to cross the bike path. There were bikes whizzing by and it was clear the turtle was in trouble. So I stopped to help it across the path. I bent over and picked it up, and it pee'd all over my shoes.

It's the last time I do that again....

that turned out to be a great chance to get a close look at a very good sized snapper. good job saving it! that would be a terribly tragic end for such an old boy/girl if you did not find it.

Great work and pics ng! thumbs2: Nice looking turtle

Ive tossed a few big snappers back into the woods from the highway around here, they run rampant. How many you want will? :hmm3grin2orange:

Always sad to see the dead ones on the road though

Nice save! I've always like snappers, it's too bad they get such a bad rap.

They bite hard! lol see what it did to that stick! They usually only bite when they are out of the water. They swim away fairly quick, you can see them spin around and take off.lol
It would make a nice pet because they live so long!

Nice snapper you found there NG! My bud has a breeding pair in his pond that have hibernated and laid eggs for 5-6 years now. They are big snappers and we play with them sometimes, they'll getcha when you're fiddling around with the pump. Seen 3 people get bit by them last summer but no missing fingers. Lotsa blood though.. hehe.. they are amazing creatures to be able to watch everyday!

Way to go! :19: I'm so glad you were able to help him! I can't imagine how stressful it must have been when he realized he was stuck...

Was his shell okay? I can't tell from the pics whether there were some cracks or that was just shadow...

I went back the next day and he was nowhere in site.
