Not sure if this stuff is algae, so it might be in the wrong topic.

My son left our lights on 24X7 for a few days on my last business trip. Normally, I'd come home to a ton of green, gooey algae all over the place.

But, this time things were different.

The stuff on the tops of the plants was a a clear-ish, slightly milky goo. I touched some if it and it had the same gooey texture as the algae. The most visible difference was the different color.

I've been using a UV sterilizer.....could this the effects of the UV sterilizer ?

Cello - thanks for that link....it's a nice writeup.

Geez, the stuff in my tank just didn't look like staghorn.

What's odd is that it had the texture of cyanobacteria, but was only present at the very top of the tank, and was milky white.

It's gone now, but if it ever comes back, I'll be sure to get a pic.
