This is an excellent article, since ammonia poisoning seems to be one of those things that is generally known but not really understood. This sets concrete numbers for just how lethal your ammonia levels for a given temp and pH are. Note that he says you should not go over 1/10 the EPA lethality value. Keep this in mind when cycling!
I figure I might as well put this here but nitrite poisoning can be reduced by adding 1 tablespoon of AQUARIUM salt per 5 gallons of tank water. Make sure to mix it in another container. Don't dump it in your tank or your fish will inhale a salt crystal and start spasming.
