will a canister filter help at all ?

I know that in a reef system a canister filter does more harm than good, is their any use for one in FOWLR tank in conjunction with a skimmer and live rock ?

I wouldn't go through the trouble. Its just going to make more work for you in cleaning it. The skimmer, 1-1.5 lbs of live rock per gallon and adequate flow are more then enough filtration for a FOWLR

I ran a canister on mine for a while and it was fine. The thing with canisters is that you have to be on top of them at all times maintenance wise. And for the work that's involved they're really not worth it. I took mine off a while back and plan to occasionaly use it only when I need to run carbon or something to that effect.
