I have black hair looking stuff thats on my decor and gravel. Its not a lot but want to get rid of it before it comes a big problem. Any suggestions on what it is and how to treat it would be great. I have a 50 gallon tropical tank. I'm new here and hope I am threading in the correct area.

:wavingyellow: hi and welcome! glad you are here!
your problem sounds like algae. perhaps bba. if you post your problem in the algae section you would get better responses. and pictures would help to identify it if that is possible.

definatly sounds like black brush algae... its some tough stuff. i have heard of taking a syringe full of hydrogen peroxide and squirting directly on the algae will kill it... i have it in my 55. the only thing that will eat it are true SAE but they are hard to find....

Florish Excel will also kill BBA. I too use a syringe, but filled with Excel. I've always thought that H2O2 will kill the bacteria in the filter and that Excel is safer.
