View Full Version : What is taking my fish?
I had 3 platies and I now have one.
That's as simple as it gets.
The first fish (Scarlet) was pregnant for some time and was then burised by another platy. She dropped her fry and then became lethargic shortly after. She was later found dead.
The second fish (Walter, the biggest) ate most of fry droped. He sat in the corner (he started before the first fish died.) refusing to accept food for more than a month before he died. (presumably, I can't find the body)
Now the last platy (Danny) has started to act like the Scarlet, Who's symptoms were much less notable than Walter but scarlet took far less time to die than walter.
Danny has pretty much been the perfect fish, he was small when I got him but he got bigger. He has always looked the healthiest but I fear he is next.
What can I do?

sounds like Ammonia Poisoning?
from what i read, your suppose to reduce or discontine feeding.
water change- 25-50%
add chemcial to reduce ammonia if you have a really high level of ammonia.
but i would get a second answer since i actually don't have experience with that sickness.....

Water changes are at 50% already, sttill haven't found replacement test tubes.
Also I have 6 one inch cories and now 1 platy in a 29 gal with plants so I don't think it's ammonia.

i had a similar issue once, the fish died eventually. then yet again my java moss hadn't died, and niether were my plants. and all the parameters were normal. hehe. sorry that wasn't helpful at all!
my suggestion.....look up fish diseases.
Bumped becuase I'd like some more responses.

kaz, it's kind of hard to give you reasonable answer without knowing what the water perameters are in your tank. If I were in your shoes, I would take out the plants that weren't doing well. You don't need them rotting in there. Also I would do more water changes. You said you are now doing 50%. I would do that much maybe 2-3 times a week for a while and see if the fish respond. Poor water quality is the major cause of fish disease, this may be the problem with your tank.
Speaking of not wanting things decaying...
Let's play a gme of find the dead fish!
This is an old picture but my tank is pretty much the same.

Find the spot that my dead fish is hiding!
I cannot find it so far!
I also got a new bulb that has a 6,700 k rating so hopefully that helps.

I know this is kind of obvious, forgive me, but have you looked inside the skull and helmet?

Checked the skull first, I mean, where would I go to die? A giant skull seems like a start.
Helmet I can see into the back of, butI can t quite see the top.
I am also a total wuss, so I really don't want to feel blinnd ly in a spot where something my be dead so yeah.

Well i guess I'm a total wuss too, I don't want to go sticking my fingers into something that may have something dead in it either.
Have you tried looking in the filter? Maybe he got sucked up into that.

There's a filter intake cover; The platy fry can't even pass through it.
Do you guys think it is floating underneath the driftwood or something?
I mean, he never left the top corner of the tank so why would he go down there?
Danny is poopin' the coclour white.
That means internal parasites, right?

Flakey and brakey, and a solid white colour.
is it constant?
and i don't mean to offend when i say this but what is your procedure with your tank?
what do you feed, how often, how many types of foods?
how do you do a water change?
i only ask this b/c recently one of my fish died from what seems the same sickness and then one of my other fish seemed to get the same sickness, then i went on vacation and when i got home seven days later the fish is doing better and looks much healthier
all i did was a 50% water change before i left,
and fed them like half of what i normally fed them while i was away with a vaction feeder
i also used a gravel pump with the 50% water change for the first time in 2 weeks.
now it sounds like i have a different sickness on my hands but you never know....
and all my other fish are healthy
also i had my light on a timer but for some reason i don't think it worked.so for 6 days the lights were off.....
so maybe my experience will help you.

Well, Things have changed a bit.
Still a 50% change each week, I only have time for one feeding a day (Bad, I know.)
But it is beginning to look a lot better without meds, itis now longer, thicker and less white (It could be brown or white, the lighting makes it difficult to tell.) It is certainly not clearer so I think my apathy made him better.
If that's sand in your tank maybe they were digging in the sand for some food and a gas bubble killed them.
