Bought a 75 gallon tank used. It came with a Magnum 350 canister with all of the quick disconnects. They had been using carbon in it which I am not going to do. My though was to use the filter sleeve for mechanical filtration and then fill the carbon/media container with Aquaclear biomax for the biological filtration. Does this sound like a good plan?

It also came with a water polishing insert that can be used instead of the media container. When would you use this? If you removed the media container you would loose all of your bacteria wouldn't you?

I should also add that it also came with a python and I am in love with it, no more buckets for me. I am going to move the fish in the 55 gallon to the 75 and move the fish in the 20 gallon to the 55 gallon. Even with buckets we always did a 25% water change once a week so with the python that will continue and could even do 50% if needed.

Why aren't you moving the 20 into the 75?
They need more room than the others.

I agree with you, however the 55 gallon is now in the living room, it is my tank. the 20 gallon is in my 15 year old sons room and is his tank. With my supervision he does all the maintenance on it. His room is not big enough for a 75 gallon tank. The 55 gallon is a tall tank and will fit perfectly in his room.

Sorry, that should be better. and wait until I add the 75 gallon. :19:

I had planned on selling the 20 gallon set up but decided to set it up in the office instead. My wife said when I run out of rooms and try and put one in the bathroom she is going to have me committed. :hmm3grin2orange:

You will need to supplement that 75g with another filter. The Magnum 350 doesn't hold a lot of media and thus doesn't support as large a bacterial colony as some of the other canisters.

But yeah, filling it with Biomax would be fine.

What do you mean by "Magnum 350 doesn't hold a lot of media and thus doesn't support as large a bacterial colony as some of the other canisters"
I bought a used 72gal. that came with the Mag 350 as well, now doesn't the "Bio-Wheel" support the "bacterial colony " ? In the 350 I just have carbon and the blue filter bag around that....

Thanks,

Jim

The biowheel will help out, yeah. The Magnum 350 I had did not come with a biowheel. In your place, I would get rid of the carbon, add ceramic noodles/biomax instead and call it done.

I'd fill it with foam.

IMO a magnum 350 is not enough filtration on a 75g unless it is lightly stocked. I would add another canister or a HOB along with it.

C-64,

OK, if I get rid of the carbon and add ceramic noodles/biomax instead how often do you clean that? What is "biomax"? Isn't the "noodles" just setting up another bio. filter?

Thanks,

Jim

I also received a magnum 350 in a used deal it came with a pair of bio wheel setups. if you want message me maybe i can send them to you. I turned my cannister into a vacuum so i can clean the gravel more often without changing the water if i dont want to. it works awesome.
just need a longer main vacuum tube and i wont get wet at all. the shorter tube im using from my smaller setup has to be submerged about 4-6 inches then it hits the gravel.

But if you want the bio wheels hit me up privately and we can see what we can work out.

C-64,

I found the noodles/biomax at a LFS today. So, I just fill the canister with them and still use the foam bag on the 350? Do you clean just the filter bag or what??

Thanks,

Jim
