Earlier tonight my wife and I were watching a show on PBS about octopus and squids. For some time now I've been researching for a large 75-125G saltwater tank we plan to setup sometime next year when we get settled into our new house. My wife is now obsessed with the idea that we should get an octopus and/or squid for the tank.

Is this possible? Are there any species that are small enough for the tank? Given what I saw on the show tonight it seems like they would be a high risk for escaping.

Thanks for the help! thumbs2:

you would have a terrible time trying to keep an Octopus from escaping, but I'm sure its been done

It's possible. I would recommend the bimac species. He's right though, your goin to have a fun time trying to stimulate it so it doesn't get bored and escape

www.reefscavengers.com these guys sell octopus for aquaria, not very expensive and small enough, check it out, the main thing with an octopus is to have a lid that won't leave any space for the octopus to escape and keeping pristine water, with the right equipment this can be done.

Not any lid will work octopus are quite strong and for what i have read you need at least a 20 pound lid, this is the info i have seen on the internet not quite sure how accurate it is.

I don't recommend squids although if you could get a hold of some cuttlefish eggs, with the right care and upkeep(expert) you can own of the most craziest creatures alive

You could always bolt the lid shut with a lock and key, that way it can't open it. But from what I'm guessing you would need a sump in order to do water changes, as opening the lid for anything but feeding quick might lead to him jumping out, and god only knows how hard it would be to attempt to put it back into the tank with all its suckers and it freaking out lol

I agree with forgetmyname. I thought about getting one myself but I was told that octopus have beaks and they can escape through any hole that the beak can fit through.
