Everybody is gonna think this is a weird question, but here goes.
I have ALL 7 of my tanks in the basement, and half have lights. When i shut off the tank lights for the night, all that is left for light is the actual basement lights, which is 4 lightbulbs. Im getting ticked because its a waste of electricity to have the lights running so much, and i have to change them constantly. Can fish manage to swim around in PITCH, and i mean 0% light without bumping into anything for 12 hours? Would my firebelly toads care too?

I turn everything off at night or I can't sleep.

i have my tank in the basement as well, but i have 2 leds, a red and a blue that shine down from the top. unless the fish go under the light, i cant see them, so its dark for them. my guppies in my bedroom are in complete black when i go to bed at night, and they do fine.
Those leds that i have are pretty cool, and they use almost no electricity, and since they're leds, they last for thousands of millions of billions of hours.

I dont have any LED's, but pitch black sounds alright.
Everything gets turned off at night here too...
...not sure why you're leaving the ceiling lights on...fish don't need them...

Hey,sorry to change the subject but i have this fish that just seems to trash everything i put him with, can anyone ID him for me or give me a little info...would much appreciate it???:help:
Fish sleep just like we do. They are done for the day. I can sleep with some minimal lights on, and so can they. They don't however need any light at night. They are asleep and won't know the difference!

think about the lunar cycle. it can get damn dark with no moon out.
they'll be fine. i bet they can see better than you think.
dude they are fish not people, their world is naturally darker than ours.

The image of a school of tetras moving in a dark tank, and one of the tetras smacking it's face into a piece of driftwood tickles me ;)

Most of the fish sleep at night anyway and the nocturnal ones have already adapted to swimming in the dark without breaking their nose, so your fish will be absolutely fine.

Having the light/dark cycle is pretty important for the fish. It's during this night time that they rest without having too many worries about predators (except for those pesky nocturnal ones)! Also, I know for at least zebrafish breeding it's this cycle that induces them to spawn (normally they start right after the lights come on). Anyways, the short is that their is no reason to leave the lights on at night, the fish aren't going to run into anything (though it might be funny to see).

Thanks for the giggle picturing all the fish running into their driftwood!:ezpi_wink1:
Fish are fine, lights are more of an aesthetic issue for us unless there are plants. They would probably be fine with the typical daytime light that filtered in from the room. Since I started letting the tannins from bogwood leech into my water I have noticed my bottom feeders being MUCH more active all day even after all of the rearranging I did.
Mastodon....please post your Q in the proper thread so that more people can see it and respond to help you.

When i had my i.d shark i could have NO lights on. He would flip out if there was even a little bit of light. I could only have 10% light in there
