View Full Version : Neon tetras in a 10g and a 1.75g
I have a 10 gallon tank with 3 neon tetras, two African dwarf frogs, and 2 ghost shrimp. Recently we just got a 1.75 gallon tank at a swap meet, with nothing in it presently.
I'm wondering about how many tetras I can/should put in the tanks. I've always heard as a rule of the thumb, to make sure that you have one gallon of water in the tank for every one inch of length of fish. I'm not sure if this applies to small fish like tetras--nor am I sure if frogs should be included in this equation or not (the two frogs are about an inch long, excluding the legs).
Can folks clarify this for me?

That 1.75 gallon is too small for anything, but shrimp. It would okay for a betta, but 2.5g+ is a better choice for a betta.
I would just add shrimp in the tank, the 1.75 tank is too small for any type of tetra.

I think you could add 3 more neons to the 10g and put the shrimp in the 1.75g with some plants.
Wow that was quick. :)
OK I can do that with my 1.75...those shrimp really are cute.
How about the 10g?
I think you can bump up your school to around 4-5 and maybe add some otos for cleanup crew. (for the ten gallon)

Otos? I'm only familiar with algae-eaters and Plecos.... can you explain that please? As you can see I'm only a guppy.
Oh sorry here is a link..

Can be found at most chain petstores and best algae eater out there!

Yes, once you get ottos, you'll love them! Thier small and cute, and keeps the tank really clean. But make sure to get a couple of them, they like to be in groups

I concur that about 3 more neons in the 10 would work, with some shrimp and live plants in the smaller tank, if you wish. Really nothing else can go in that thing. Dwarf corydoras catfish in place of otos would be good with your tetras as well, although they are not really agae eaters...more like gravel hoovers, lol.
Do you have living plants in your 10?

Yeah I got something rather leafy (forget the name)... and since I read today that neons love lots of plants, I'll put in one more at least.

I agree with the general consensus, sure up your neon school to at least 6, and nothing will fit in the other tank besides shrimp or snails, depending on the species. 2 or so mystery snails would be great, but not more. Shrimp, just make sure they dont get bigger than an inch or so(common for most fw species) An otto would be your best bet for algae, but they may not do well once there is no more algae.
As far as algae-eating in my 10g, I have two ghost shrimp. Do they not count? As bottom feeders, do they simply chew up the "visible" food, but not consume algae?
