View Full Version : How Fast?

I recently picked up a small Royal Pleco. Now I know he's going to get pretty big, and I will eventually have to upgrade the tank (currently he's in a 29 gal), but I'm wondering if anyone has any idea how quickly he will outgrow this tank?

I had a normal Pleco in my 10g a while a ago, and he got 6 inches in about 4 months. I had to give him away to someone who had a bigger tank.

I think it also depends on how much you feed them, right? I barely ever feed my common pleco, and he grew about 3 inches in six months, but I think he has plenty of other stuff to eat

my 2 common and 1 clown pleco got 8 algae wafers a day

It all depends on tank conditions, it took my girlfriends pleco 4-5 years to hit the 11" mark, he has added 4" to that since being here less than a year. The other rescue plec we have was around 3 1/2" when I got her July 4th, and is around 6" now.......larger tank, more room, water changes, and food make a big difference. If you keep a healthy tank and feed him properly he will grow steadily.

I saw someone STUFF, and literally stuff a full grown pleco into a little bag and stick it outside their apartment because they didnt want it anymore. By that time I got rid of my 120g and the largest was my 33g, and that wouldnt work, so i gave it to a vet and apparently the vet found a home with a big tank.

It definately depends on water quality, space, and the amount of food it gets to eat.
