Okay so I wasn't really paying attention to my tank today (the 10 gallon in my sig). I fed the fish in the AM and was gone all day. Just now I'm looking in my tank, and I think the tetra's had babies! I count 5 fry!

I am excited but freaking out! It is 1AM here - so nothing is open - I have no fry holder thing and have NO clue what to do. They've got to be baby tetra's I only have 1 molly and the cory babies would look different I assume.

Will they eat the babies!? I want them to live! They don't seem to be bothering them but I am FREAKING out, lol.

Any ideas? Sorry for the frantic post but wow! Was NOT expecting that.:help:

I love this when it happens. It is so nice and rewarding.

IMO the best thing to do would be to get a small glass jar and add it to the tank, and fill it with tank water. Then catch the fry and add it to the jar. They will be safe then.

High chance they will eat them.

Good luck,

I have like a juice glass and a shot glass... if I put them in this in the tank will that work? I'm hoping it wont tip over... should all the babies go in one cup or should they each get their own?

The best type of jar would be one of those Jam jars. One you can put a lid on. Just a lid of mess would be best. Anyway as long as the jar can't be nocked down it will work.

As for the fry all in one jar.

I honestly have NO idea. lol. I guess it must be, everyone things they are baby mollys on the other forum I post at too.

I bought a baby nursery thing today that sits in the tank for them today.

Any idea how long I should leave the 4 babies in there?

Also - now that I will have FIVE mollys, 5 tetras, and 4 corys in my tank.... how big of a tank do I need to upgrade to?

Get a picture of the fry so we can I.D the fish so you can know for sure. If they are guppies, I'd upgrade because those things will turn into baby making machines. Get a nice 20-30 gallon tank. You can get a nice package. Or if you have the money, go for a 55 they have the packages for like 200. You get the tank, filter, heater, hood and you wont need to cycle again.

oops sorry. the links are still in the original order that the other ones were.

so does everyone think a 20 or 30 gallon would be big enough for all my current fish and the new additions? I basically have NO budget for this, but I want to keep the babies so I will try and upgrade asap... I think a 55 gallon would be way out of my $ range though... =(

Ay yi yi. She's a female.

I still can't believe it - 3 months and nothing, and suddenly babies! She must have been pregnant forever, unless its a balloon molly tetra crossbreed, ahahaha.

It's crazy because when I first started the fish hobby I accidentally bought some female guppies and promptly took them back because I knew they bred like crazy - thought I was safe just getting the one molly, lol.

I don't think they crossbread so it's probably the tetras. But who knows

Give it a month and you will tell for sure if it is tetras or guppies

They're not necessarily molly fry.

However, Mollies can hold sperm for up to like 6 months or something. So unfortunately it is more likely that they are molly fry.

A shame because Neon Tetras are notoriously difficult to breed. If they had bred in your tank that would have been a very good sign.

If you actually want to breed your tetras there are a number of steps you can take to make the breeding procedure much, much easier. I have absolute confidence that you could breed them if you wanted to and took the steps to make it happen. They aren't quite as hard to breed if you really want them to.

(Hmmm... do you intend to get more mollies at any point in time?)

I'd second that they're Molly fry. The eggs would have been eaten if they were neons I would think, or when they they were first hatched. You would have noticed tiny little things before they got that big too. Definately baby mollies!

I agree. I think they're mollys. I don't think the eggs would have made it with what's in the tank already. I havea bunch of mollys and I've seperated the boy from the girls and they are still spitting out babys. I got 8 this weekend! The females can store sperm for quite a while.

Well either way, congrats!!!

I would go hit up graigs list and yard sales for a new tank. You'll save a lot of money that way. I got a 20g long a couple weeks ago for $30. I think something like that would be good for what you have. Unless you plan to breed... or you can just leave the fry in the tank and let nature do what it does.
As for keeping these new little guys, I would leave them in the breeder for a month or so. Or at least until they are bigger then the largest mouth in the tank. If you have a small 5-10g setup, you could always put them in that by them selves for a while until they get big.
Good luck with them! thumbs2:
