I have read sooooo many posts (most with livebearer, algae-eater and rainbow tanks) that 'complain' about dirty glass.
WTF?
Dirty glass = healthy water = healthy glass?
or not?
PS: I :1luvu: Algae!!!!!

Dirty glass isn't pretty.
but that's it, it's purely aesthetics, algae on the glass absorbs dissolved waste

Algae blooms can also alter water parameters, choke plants, etc..
Not all algae is beneficial and not everything on the tank is an algae.

I prefer to let algea grow on the back glass and to some extent on the decor. It's a food source and helps to keep nitrates in check to a degree. Plus it looks more natural than a sterile looking perfectly cleaned tank. In the end it all comes down to prefference of the individual. some folks hate it, I happen to like it.

I let it grow on my background but thats it. I like the natual look it gives it. I want to be able to see through the glass or take nice pics without anything in the way.

My front glass is cleaned of it, the sides and back are left to their own devices.

Algae points to healthy tank conditions ,it also look nice bcoz it makes the tank look like naturally decorated .But in my opinion, over growth of algae can make the tank unhealthy bcoz it consumes a huge amount of oxygen and mixes a great amount of CO2(every living creature does that, algae are no exceptions).
so,if u want to keep them you have to control their growth

Large algae is usually a sign of excessive lighting or excessive nitrates/phosphates.
Too often people confuse algae with cynobacteria and diatoms.

Same here. I just like to see through the front clearly.

Really? Isn't algae a plant?
I agree with most of the statements staid thus far with regards to the algae.
IMO a lot of algae is not a good thing. A over abundance or imbalance in the fish tank.
One thing you can't not have some algae in a tank. But little shows the signs IMO that the tank is in good condition.

You may want to look into this statement.

Exactly. For all intensive purposes an algae covered tank is a planted tank, and reaps the benefits that accompany it.
Green algae I think looks lovely if you cultivate it carefully. Back in the day, I never used a background I would just purposely clean all the sides except the back (and one side if the tank is in a corner). Looks great, worth the price thats for sure.

I recently bought a Golden Algea eater who is doing a pretty good job of maintaining excess... I do clean the front glass, but let it grow (hair algae) on rocks and diftwood.
