Goodeids are about as easy to sex as the more common pet shop livebearers but it is done differently. Instead of a gonopodium, the male goodeid has a characteristic split anal fin called an andropodium. The quick visual impression is that it is a traditional common livebearer female with a damaged anal fin. Another name or goodeids is splitfins, for the obvious reason. This is an extreme closeup of one of my Xenotoca Eiseni males but is typical of the whole group of fish called goodeids.

Her anal fin is a very broad fan shape by comparison with the male's anal fin.
Both of these fish were less than 2 inches total length when the pictures were taken although they can get a bit bigger than 2 inches.
