I was thinking of hatching some brine shrimp for my fish... the thing is I don't really want to set something up and I can't have a couple coke bottles hanging off the tank... (g/f's rules...lol)
Now from what I remember of these things from when I was a kid was you put them in water and they hatched in a few hours. Now I don't have the intention of keeping these guys around long. They hatch, they're food. And pretty much that quick.
So could I just place something like a small nonslotted breeder box on the side of my tank with some tank water in it, drop a batch of eggs in and wait a while, let them hatch and feed them to the fish? I don't really need a running supply and pretty much just want to hatch what I'll need for that day for the occasional treat.
Thanks all

I could be wrong, but I think brine shrimp need salt water to hatch and live in. Also, the only problem with hatching them and then feeding is that they will be very low in nutrition. I think it is best to feed the brine shrimp something to eat first then feed the shrimp to the fish for optimal nutrtion.

Well how about a SeaMonkey habitat? (big wink)

This is something I'm gonna try.

It seems like a great idea and it is placed inside the tank, so no gf issues

LMAO I know the kids would love the kit idea. :hmm3grin2orange:
I saw those hatchery kits at the store the other day... thought they looked pretty neat. Might have to check that out too. Probably the closest I'm going to get to something in the tank.
Maybe I can do a 1 gallon thing with an air stone or some thing. If I can hide it behind the tank I might be able to get away with it.
Its just that with 3 kids and cats having something open topped isn't a good idea.

And not cheesy at all.
Although I've heard that Sea Monkeys aren't the same exact species as brine shrimp, close enough though, especially if you're a hungry fish.
I remember ads in comic books when I was a kid. It seemed they built entire empires underwater and that there was a king and queen Sea Monkey along with Sea Monkey families - yeah right!
But back on topic, that in-tank brine shrimp hatchery is really cool! Looks like very minimal fuss and maintenance. I have no idea how it keeps the brine and tank water separated though while allowing the brine shrimp to swim out to their doom.

Salt water is denser than freshwater, so even though the outlet for the shrimp is underwater, the salt water stays in the container.
That's why we float better in saltwater.
